Joe’ Week 6 Notes & Observations

Power 5

  • Houston QB Zeon Chriss gave the Cougars’ offense some life Friday night against TCU.  Chriss completed 15-of-18 passes for 141 yards and a TD, while adding 97 yards and a TD on the ground.   Temper expectations moving forward because here is Houston’s upcoming schedule over the next 5 weeks: Bye, at Kansas, Utah, Kansas State, Bye.
  • Syracuse RB LeQuint Allen scored 4 TDs in the Orange’s win at UNLV, doubling his TD total (2) through the first four games of the season.  QB Kyle McCord has accounted for at least 3 TDs in all five games this year and has thrown at least 3 TD passes in four of five games.
  • Oregon RB Jordan James’ utilization rate has gone up over the last two games, as he has totaled 44 rush attempts for 169 yards and 2 TDs.  WR Tez Johnson has caught at least 10 passes in three of five games this year.
  • With Wisconsin RB Chez Mellusi stepping away due to health reasons, Tawee Walker becomes a priority on the waiver wire if he is available.  Walker has scored 5 rushing TDs in the last two games.
  • Virginia WR Malachi Fields has caught 3 TD passes in the last two games, the only three TD passes QB Anthony Colandrea has thrown in the last three games.
  • One week after having three 1-yd TD runs vultured by Tate Carney, Wake Forest RB Demond Claiborne totaled 144 scrimmage yards and 3 TDs in the Deacons’ 34-30 win at NC State.
  • NC State WR KC Concepcion has 40 or fewer receiving yards in four consecutive games, which means he is expendable for many of you that need to move him on to make room for better production on the waiver wire.
  • Pitt QB Eli Holstein has thrown 3 TD passes in all five games this season, while RB Desmond Reid continued his hot start, totaling 210 scrimmage yards and a TD in the Panthers’ win at North Carolina.  RB Rodney Hammond made his return to the team, but I do not see Hammond affecting Reid’s fantasy potential as long as the 5-8 and 175-pound Reid stays healthy, which as we have seen, is not a given.
  • North Carolina RB Omarion Hampton had 23 rush attempts for 106 yards and a TD against Pitt.  Excluding the game against Charlotte, when Hampton exited in the first half, the junior back is averaging 28.4 touches per game (25.2 rush attempts and 3.2 receptions).
  • Louisville WR Ja’Corey Brooks has caught at least 1 TD pass in four of five games this year and has caught 2 TDs in each of the last two games.  One week after catching 5 passes for 71 yards in his season debut against Notre Dame, Caullin Lacy only caught two passes for one yard against SMU.
  • The Missouri offense hasn’t been as explosive as predicted and QB Brady Cook has not accounted for more than 2 TDs in any single game this season.  Cook, along with RBs Nate Noel and Marcus Carroll, have only totaled 2 rushing TDs in the Tigers’ last three games.
  • Stanford WR Elic Ayomanor has caught a TD pass in three straight games going into next week’s matchup at Notre Dame.
  • Virginia Tech RB Bhayshul Tuten has scored at least one TD in all six games this season and he has four multiple-TD games.
  • Indiana QB Kurtis Rourke has thrown at least 3 TD passes in three of the Hoosiers’ last four games.  RBs Justice Ellison and TySon Lawton have each scored a rushing TD in five of six games this year.  WR Ke’Shawn Williams has caught a TD pass in three of the last four games.
  • Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart scored a rushing TD in each of the Rebels’ first three games, but the emergence of RB Henry Parrish and the utilization of defensive tackle JJ Pegues has dented Dart’s fantasy appeal, as the senior quarterback has accounted for only one TD in the last two weeks.  Peagues did leave Saturday’s game with an injury, but no word on the severity.  Also, WR Tre Harris left the game against South Carolina with a leg injury.  RB Henry Parrish has scored a rushing TD in five consecutive games.
  • Georgia WR Dillon Bell has caught a TD pass in three of the Bulldogs’ last four games.
  • Not only did Ohio State QB Will Howard throw four TD passes in the Buckeyes’ 35-7 win over Iowa, but he scored a rushing TD in his fourth consecutive game.
  • Iowa RB Kaleb Johnson failed to score 2 TDs in a game for the first time this season, but his rushing TD against Ohio State extended his scoring streak to five games this season.  Johnson has scored nine of the Hawkeyes’ 15 offensive TDs this season.
  • If you are still holding Oklahoma State RB Ollie Gordon II, Saturday’s game against West Virginia may have pushed you over the edge.  WR De’Zhaun Stribling has caught a TD pass in three of the Cowboys’ last four games.
  • West Virginia RB Jaheim White has scored a rushing TD in four straight games and RB CJ Donaldson has scored a rushing TD in four of five games this year and has scored multiple TDs in two of the last three games.
  • Nebraska’s defense held Rutgers RB Kyle Monangai to his lowest rushing output of the season (78 yards) and Monangai failed to score a TD for the first time this season.
  • Alabama QB Jalen Milroe accounted for only 2 TDs in the Tide’s 40-35 loss at Vanderbilt after accounting for at least 4 TDs in every game leading up to Week 6.  WR Ryan Williams seems to add to his highlight reel every week.
  • Vanderbilt QB Diego pavia has thrown 2 TD passes in all four games against FBS opponents.  RB Sedrick Alexander has scored at least one TD in four of five games this year.  TE Eli Stowers has caught at least 6 passes in three consecutive games.
  • Oregon State RB Jam Griffin suffered and injury against Colorado State.  If he is out for an extended period of time, Anthony Hankerson become a must-add and a met-start.  Hankerson has scored a TD in every game this season and has scored 2 TDs in four of five games.
  • Clemson WR Antonio Williams has caught a TD pass in three of the Tigers’ last four games.  RB Phil Mafah has posted 100-yard rushing games in three of his last four outings.
  • Iowa State WR Jayden Higgins posted his first 100-yard receiving game of the year Saturday night and has scored in each of the Cyclones’ first five games of the year.
  • After three consecutive 100-yard, 2-TD games, Michigan RB Kalel Mullings was held to 49 yards at Washington Saturday night.
  • Washington WR Denzel Boston caught another TD pass Saturday night against Michigan and has at least one TD reception in five of six games, with three multiple-TD games.
  • Tennessee RB Dylan Sampson scored 2 TDs in the Vols’ 19-14 loss at Arkansas.  Sampson has scored at least one TD in all five games this season and has four multiple-TD games.  QB Nico Iamaleava has accounted for only 2 TDs in the last three games, and depending on the depth of your league, I would argue that Iamaleava is droppable.
  • Arkansas RB Ja’Quinden Jackson ran for 57 yards and a TD in the Hogs’ win over Tennessee, which means he has scored at least one rushing TD in all six games this season.  QB Taylen Green has accounted for only 2 TDs in the last three games.
  • UCF struggled at Florida, but RB RJ Harvey found a way to total over 100 scrimmage yards and find the end zone for the 11th time this season.
  • Texas Tech RB Tahj Brooks has rushed for at least 100 yards in all five games in which he has played this year.
  • Arizona QB Noah Fifita has only thrown 3 TD passes in the Wildcats’ last four games.  WR Tetairoa McMillan’s numbers and fantasy points in Week 1 (.5-PPR): 10-304-4 = 59.4 Fantasy points; McMillan’s numbers and fantasy points in the following four games (.5-PPR): 27-362-0 = 49.7 Fantasy Points.
  • Miami’s schedule looks so good that it is difficult to see QB Cam Ward’s numbers regressing, so expect him to remain in top contention for the Heisman. The best thing going for him is that there is another player posting huge numbers that will not have a big-game win on their schedule, Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty.

Group 5

  • Texas State QB Jordan McCloud has accounted for at least 3 TDs in every game this season and has thrown at least 3 TD passes in 4 of 5 games.
  • Troy WR Devonte Ross has three 100-yard receiving games this season, but he also has finished three games with fewer than 30 yards.  Given the Trojans’ struggles, Ross has become a boom-or-bust fantasy play.
  • Sam Houston State RB Jay Ducker has scored in three consecutive games, but in Saturday’s win at UTEP, he was outplayed by teammate DJ McKinney, who ran for 138 yards and 2 TDs.
  • UTEP RB Ezell Jolly’s workload against Sam Houston State suggests he has taken over as the Miners’ RB1 (17-76-1; Jevon Jackson 4-19-0).
  • Jacksonville State QB Tyler Huff has rushed for at least 77 yards in four consecutive games and has accounted for 9 TDs (5 rush) during that stretch.  RB Tre Stewart has totaled 7 rushing TDs in the Gamecocks’ last three games.
  • UNLV QB Hajj-Malik Williams has totaled 8 TDs (2 rush) in his first two starts of the 2024 season.  Since Williams has taken over as the starting QB, WR Ricky White III has totaled 20 receptions for 262 yards and 3 TDs.  The transfer announcement of Michael Allen did not affect RB Jai’Den Thomas’ utilization rate, as he finished Friday night’s game with only 6 rush attempts.
  • Army RB Kanye Udo has scored at least 1 TD in four of five games this year, while QB Bryson Dailey has rushed for at least 100 yards in four consecutive games and has totaled 12 TDs (8 rush) in the Black Knights’ last three games.
  • Navy QB Blake Horvath has totaled 15 TDs (10 rush) in the Midshipmen’s last four games, while RB Eli Heidenreich has caught a TD pass in four of five games and is averaging 87.0 receiving yards per game.
  • Northern Illinois RB Antario Brown, who was listed as questionable going into Saturday’s matchup against UMass, left the game due to injury and backups Gavin Williams and Jaylen Poe totaled 34 rush attempts for 223 yards and 3 TDs.
  • Tulane RB Makhi Hughes has scored at least one TDX in every game this season and has scored 2 TDs in each of the last two games.
  • Western Michigan RB Jalen Buckley made his return in Week 6, but Jaden Nixon ran for 124 yards and 3 TDs in the Broncos’ win at Ball State.  Nixon is averaging 153.0 rushing yards per game over the last three games and has scored 6 TDs during that stretch.  Given Nixon’s impressive run, I would be starting him next week against Akron.
  • Charlotte RB Hahsaun Wilson has scored a rushing TD in three of the 49ers’ last four games.
  • Going into his Week 6 matchup against Temple, UConn WR Skyler Bell had three 100-yard games, but he disappointed on Saturday, catching just one pass for 8 yards against the Owls.
  • Appalachian State WR Kaedin Robinson has caught at least 6 passes in four of five games this season, but still has not caught a TD pass after totaling 10 TD catches in 2023.  QB Joey Aguilar has not accounted for more than 2 TDs in game this year since the Mountaineers’ Week 1 win over East Tennessee.
  • How about Marshall head coach Charles Huff telling reporters after the game that Stone Earle is healthy and could have started, but he wanted to throw a curveball.  Well, Braylon Braxton threw 3 TD passes and ran for 140 yards and 2 scores in the Thundering Herd’s 52-37 win over Appalachian State.
  • Toledo WR Jerjuan Newton posted a season-high 127 receiving yards in Saturday’s win over Miami (OH) and he has now caught a TD pass in four of five games this year.
  • Miami (OH) sophomore WR Javon Tracy has caught a TD pass in back-to-back weeks and has totaled 15 receptions, 168 receiving yards, and 2 TDs in the last two games.
  • Bowling Green TE Harold Fannin, Jr., has caught at least 8 passes in four consecutive games and has averaged 151.3 receiving yards per game during that stretch.
  • It nice to see a healthy Tory Horton Saturday night, as the Colorado State WR caught 9 passes for 162 yards and a TD in the Rams’ 39-31 loss at Oregon State.  RB Avery Morrow has logged 46 rush attempts for 296 yards and 3 TDs in the last two games.
  • Old Dominion freshman QB Colton Joseph completed 22-of-40 passes for 262 yards and 3 TDs, and added 68 yards and a score on the ground against Coastal Carolina Saturday night.  If you need a quarterback, Joseph might not be a bad roll of the dice.
  • Coastal Carolina RB Braydon Bennett made his return from injury and ran for 48 yards and 2 TDs, while adding a 37-yard TD reception, in the Chanticleers’ 45-37 win over Old Dominion.  In three games this season, Bennett has scored 6 TDs.
  • After accounting for 13 TDs in Weeks 4 and 5, James Madison QB Alonza Barnett was limited to one TD in the Dukes’ 21-19 loss at LA Monroe.
  • LA Monroe has been a surprise at 3-1, and RB Ahmad Hardy has scored a rushing TD in four of five games this season.
  • Utah State RB Rahsul Faison posted his third straight 100-yard rushing game Saturday night.  Over the last three games, Faison has averaged 24 rush attempts per game.  Also, in the last two games, WR Jalen Royals has totaled 19 receptions for 323 yards and 3 TDs.
  • Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty with four games of three or more TDs!  WR Cam Camper has caught a TD pass in three of the Broncos’ last four games.
  • How good has San Jose State WR nick Nash been?  He caught 5 passes for 75 yards and a TD against Nevada Saturday night and that was his worst outing of the year.  Nash has caught at least one TD pass in all five games this season and has three multiple-TD games.  RB Floyd Chalk has three multiple-TD games this year, too.
  • Hawaii WR Pofele Ashlock has caught at least 8 passes and a TD in four consecutive games.
  • In the last two games, San Diego State RB Marquez Cooper has totaled 64 rush attempts for 220 yards and 3 TDs.
