Joe’s Week 8 Notes & Observations

Power 5

  • Boston College QB Thomas Castellanos has thrown at least 2 TD passes in five of six games this year, but his inability to run the ball has limited his fantasy production.  Through six games, Castellanos has 161 rushing yards, whereas he totaled 957 rushing yards and scored 11 rushing TDs in 2023.
  • Virginia Tech RB Bhayshul Tuten has scored at least one TD in every game this season and he has three multiple-TD games.  Tuten has scored 12 rushing TDs in seven games and no other Hokies running back has scored a rushing TD this year.
  • In his last four games, Duke WR Jordan Moore has totaled 8 receptions for 147 yards and 1 TD, and with SMU up next, he feels like a ‘bench’ or ‘drop’.  RB Star Thomas has scored at least one TD in three of the Blue Devils’ last four games.
  • Oklahoma State RB Ollie Gordon II scored 3 TDs in Friday’s game at BYU, but I wonder how many fantasy owners actually started him.  His ability to play through injury is admirable, but I still do not have a ton of confidence starting him moving forward, especially with Alan Bowman at quarterback.  Bowman hasn’t completed at least 60% of his passes against all 5 P4 opponents this season.
  • Since his return from injury, BYU RB LJ Martin has scored 4 TDs in the last two games.  WR Darius Lassiter has caught a TD pass in four of the Cougars’ last five games.
  • Arizona State RB Cam Skattebo has scored a TD in six of seven games this year and has scored at least 2 TDs in four of the Sun Devils’ last five games.
  • Rutgers RB Kyle Monangai has scored at least one rushing TD in six of seven games this season.
  • Indiana RB Justice Ellison has scored at least one rushing TD in six straight games and teammate TySon Lawton has scored a rushing TD in six of seven games.  QB Kurtis Rourke continues to impress, but his fantasy value is minimal, as the Hoosiers are run-heavy in the red zone.
  • Clemson RB Phil Mafah has scored 2 TDs in back-to-back games going into the Tigers’ Week 10 matchup against Louisville.  WR Antonio Williams has scored a TD in five of the last six games, and QB Cade Klubnik has accounted for at least 3 TDs in five of the last six games.
  • Miami QB Cam Ward’s numbers continue to get better, as he has accounted for at least 3 TDs in all seven games this season.  WR Isaiah Horton has caught a TD pass in four straight games.
  • Louisville WR Ja’Corey Brooks has caught 2 TD passes in three of the Cardinals’ last four games.
  • Auburn gifted a win to Oklahoma and QB Michael Hawkins made 2-3 big plays in that game, but he never looked the part.  I’m not saying that Jackson Arnold is a lot better, but the Sooners will likely be more competitive with him as the starter.
  • Washington State QB John Mateer got back on track with a 5-TD (2 rush) game against Hawaii, and he has now rushed for at least one TD in six of seven games this season.
  • California TE Jack Endries has posted back-to-back 100 receiving games and has caught a TD pass in two of the last three games.
  • After failing to score a TD in two of Kansas’ first three games, RB Devin Neal has scored at least one TD in four consecutive games.
  • Notre Dame QB Riley Leonard has totaled ten rushing TDs in seven games and has thrown six TD passes in the last four games after failing to throw a single TD pass in the first three games of the year.
  • In Tennessee’s 24-17 win over Alabama, RB Dylan Sampson scored 2 TDs and ran for 139 yards.  Sampson has scored in every game this year and has scored at least 2 TDs in six of seven games.
  • Alabama has not played good football since the first half of the Georgia game. For as much as I’ve knocked Tennessee QB Nico Iamaleava over the past few weeks, Milroe  played very poorly. Nico making a couple of big throws and Milroe’s inability to hit receivers was the difference in the game.
  • Baylor QB Sawyer Robertson has thrown at least 3 TD passes in three consecutive games.
  • Last year, Texas Tech RB Tahj Brooks averaged 23.3 rush attempts per game in 12 games. Through five games this season, he is averaging 24.8 rush attempts per game.
  • Colorado QB Shadeur Sanders has accounted for three or more TDs in six of seven games this season.  WR Will Sheppard has caught a TD pass in three consecutive games.
  • Texas A&M RB Le’Veon Moss has scored 5 TDs in the last two games, while teammate Amari Daniels has scored 3 TDs in the last two games.
  • Mississippi State QB Michael Van Buren Jr. has thrown two TD passes in each of the last two games.
  • Vanderbilt TE Eli Stowers has totaled over 100 yards receiving in three of the Commodores’ last four games.
  • Arkansas WR Andrew Armstrong caught 7 passes for 94 yards and a TD in the Razorbacks’ 34-10 loss to LSU.  Going into the game, Armstrong had caught 38 passes without scoring a TD.
  • UCF RB RJ Harvey has scored at least one TD in six of seven games and has four multiple-TD games this year.
  • Iowa State RB Carson Hansen has scored five rushing TDs in the last two games.  WR Jayden Higgins has caught a TD pass in six of seven games.
  • With Montrell Johnson out with an injury, freshman RB Jadan Baugh got the start and ran for 106 yards and 5 TDs in Florida’s 48-20 win over Kentucky.
  • Kentucky RB Deamonte Trayanum returned to action and finished Saturday’s game with 7 rush attempts for 26 yards.
  • How do the Texas backfield situation play out in Week 8 against Georgia?  Tre Wisner had 15 rush attempts for 52 yards, while Jaydon Blue did not have a single rush attempt.  Interestingly, Jaydon Blue finished with more fantasy production after catching a team-high seven passes for 48 yards and a TD.
  • Stanford WR Elic Ayomanor has caught a TD pass in four of the Cardinal’s last five games, but he has finished with 55 receiving yards or less in five of the last six games.

Group 5

  • Louisiana Tech WR Tru Edwards has caught at least 6 passes in three consecutive games and has posted back-to-back 100-yard receiving games.
  • Western Kentucky QB Caden Veltkamp has accounted for at least 3 TDs in all four games against G5 opponents this year.
  • Marshall RB AJ Turner has four 100-yard rushing games this year, and in Week 8 he scored more TDs (4) than he had in the Thundering Herd’s first six games (3).
  • In the absence of Malik Sherrod, Fresno State RB Elijah Gilliam has scored a rushing TD in four of the Bulldogs’ last five games.
  • Nevada RB Savion Red has totaled 7 TDs in the last four games and has rushed for at least 100 yards in two of the four.
  • Louisiana WR Lance LeGendre has caught a TD pass in three of the Ragin’ Cajuns last four games.  QB Ben Wooldridge has accounted for at least 3 TDs in four of his last five starts.
  • Coastal Carolina RB Braydon Bennett has 8 TDs in five games this year.
  • Army QB Bryson Daily scored 5 rushing TD in the win over East Carolina and now leads the FBS with 19 rushing TDs (Ashton Jeanty, Boise State – 18).
  • I could not find any pregame reports of Temple WR Dante Wright’s status before kickoff against Tulsa.
  • Eastern Michigan RB Delbert Mimms III has logged at least 20 rush attempts in each of the Eagles’ last three games.
  • After scoring 6 TDs is his last four games, FAU RB CJ Campbell was limited to 19 rushing yards in the Owls’ 38-24 loss at UTSA.
  • Texas State QB Jordan McCloud was limited to two total TDs (1 rush) in the Bobcats’  24-14 loss at Old Dominion, McCloud’s worst fantasy outing of the season.
  • Old Dominion freshman QB Colton Joseph has turned in two good outings in the last three weeks, as he ran for 111 yards and 3 TDs in the Monarchs’ Week 8 win over Texas State.
  • Western Michigan RB Jaden Nixon still looks like a solid fantasy option after rushing for 112 yards and 3 TDs in the Broncos’ 48-41 win at Buffalo.  TE Blake Bosma has c aught a TD pass in three of the last four games.
  • Tulane RB Makhi Hughes had 2 TDs in Saturday’s win over Rice.  Hughes has scored at least one TD in every game this season and has scored 2 TDs in three straight games.
  • Hawaii WR Tylan Hines has caught a TD pass in three straight games, but he has totaled only 102 receiving yards during that stretch.
  • Toledo WR Jerjuan Newton caught a TD pass in the Rockets’ 13-6 win at Northern Illinois.  The senior receiver has now caught a TD pass in six of seven games and his total of 8 TD receptions in 2024 is one shy of his single season total of 9 that he posted in both 2022 and 2023.
  • Navy fullback Alex Tecza has scored at least one TD in  five of six games this year and has totaled 5 TDs in the last two games.
  • New Mexico RB Eli Sanders has rushed for 2 TDs in back-to-back weeks.  QB Devon Dampier has rushed for at least 2 TDs in three consecutive games.
  • Utah State WR Jalen Royals over the last four games:  40 receptions, 666 yards, 5 TDs.  RB Rahsul Faison has scored at least one TD in four consecutive games.
  • San Jose State WR Nick Nash caught 10 passes for 98 yards and a TD against Wyoming and has now caught a TD pass seven consecutive games.  RB Floyd Chalk IV has scored a TD in four consecutive games and has totaled 6 TDs in the last four games.
  • Ball State TE Tanner Koziol has caught at least 8 passes in five consecutive games.
  • Memphis RB Mario Anderson has scored at least one TD in six of seven games this year and has scored 2 or more TDs four times.
  • North Texas WR DT Sheffield has caught a TD pass in five of the Mean Green’s last six games and his 42 receptions is 22 better than the team’s next-best receiver (Dalton Carnes – 20).
  • Colorado State RB Avery Morrow has finished with 20 or more rushing attempts and over 100 yards on the ground in four consecutive games.
  • UNLV QB Hajj-Malik Williams has accounted for at least 3 TDs in four straight games, and in each of those games he has thrown a TD pass to WR Ricky White III.
  • Oregon State RB Anthony Hankerson has scored a TD in seven straight games and he has five multiple-TD games, but in the Beavers’ 33-25 loss to UNLV, Hankerson was held to less than 80 scrimmage yards for the first time this season.
