Joe’s Week 9 Notes & Observations

Power 5

  • Boston College QB Thomas Castellanos has thrown at least 2 TD passes in five of six games this year, but his inability to run the ball has limited his fantasy production.  Through six games, Castellanos has 161 rushing yards, whereas he totaled 957 rushing yards and scored 11 rushing TDs in 2023.
  • Pitt’s three pick-six TDs against Syracuse killed fantasy value for all players in that game Thursday night.
  • Louisville RB Isaac Brown has taken command of the Cardinals’ backfield and has scored 5 rushing TDs in the last three games.
  • Rutgers RB Kyle Monangai left Friday’s game at USC with a head injury, but the Scarlet Knights have a Week 10 bye, so I would expect him to be back for that matchup against Minnesota.
  • USC WR Makai Lemon has totaled at least 73 receiving yards in each of the Trojans’ last three games and has averaged 98.7 receiving yards during that span.
  • Virginia Tech RB Bhayshul Tuten exited Saturday’s game against Georgia Tech with an injury, and even though he totaled 16 rushing attempts for 72 yards, the senior back failed to score a TD for the first time this season.
  • North Carolina WR JJ Jones has caught a TD pass in three of the Tar Heels’ last four games.  Omarion Hampton ran for 105 yards in Saturday’s win at Virginia, topping the 100-yard mark for the seventh time in eight games this year.
  • Between these Notes & Observation write-ups and the weekly show, I have mentioned a bunch of busts this year, and even though Jaxson Dart did not get that label early on, he has only accounted for 3 TDs in the last four games, and I’m not sure I would be starting him right now.
  • With a rushing TD in Indiana’s win over Washington, RB Justice Ellison has scored in seven consecutive games.
  • Notre Dame RB Jeremiyah Love has scored at least one TD in all eight games this season and QB Riley Leonard has scored at least one rushing TD in each of the Irish’s last seven games.
  • TCU RB Cam Cook seems to be an afterthought now with WR Savion Williams leading the Horned Frogs in rushing for a second consecutive week.  Williams finished with nine rush attempts for 68 yards and a TD.  After three consecutive games with at least 130 yards receiving, WR Jack Bech has averaged only 59.3 receiving yards per game over the last three games.
  • Texas Tech RB Tahj Brooks posted another 100-yard rushing game and he has gone over 120 yards in each of the Red Raiders’ last four games.  WR Caleb Douglas has posted at least 99 receiving yards in each of the last three games.  QB Behren Morton left Saturday’s game against TCU with an injury and was replaced by freshman Will Hammond, who finished 10-of-15 for 121 yards and a TD, while adding 16 yards and a TD on the ground.
  • Baylor QB Sawyer Robertson has now thrown at least 3 TD passes in four consecutive games and has rushed for a TD in four of seven games in which he has played.
  • Is Oklahoma State RB Ollie Gordon II back?  Maybe.  Gordon scored 2 TDs in Saturday’s loss to Baylor and has now scored 5 TDs in the last two games.  However, fantasy owners may need to sweat out an injury update, as Gordon exited the game late with what appeared to be a leg injury.
  • Minnesota RB Darius Taylor totaled 115 scrimmage yards in Saturday’s win over Maryland.  Taylor had a 51-yard run in the fourth quarter that helped his fantasy owners, but the Gophers’ running game lacks a punch this year.  Thankfully, Taylor has been very active in the passing game, as he has caught 29 passes in six games.  Last year, Taylor had only nine receptions in five games played.
  • After a slow start on Saturday, Iowa RB Kaleb Johnson finished with 109 rushing yards and 3 TDs in the Hawkeyes’ win over Northwestern, his sixth multiple-TD game this year.
  • Missouri WR Luther Burden III has now played four consecutive games without catching a TD pass.  He has totaled only 193 receiving yards during that four-game stretch.
  • UCF RB RJ Harvey has scored at least 2 TDs in five of eight games this year.
  • Oregon WR Tez Johnson has caught at least six passes and a TD in five consecutive games.
  • Hopefully, a bye week for Cal will give RB Jaydn Ott some time to heal, as his numbers against Oregon State suggest he is still not close to 100% (10 rush attempts for 11 yards).  In fact, Ott hasn’t really been healthy all year.  Teammate Javian Thomas has scored a rushing TD in three consecutive games.
  • No Isaiah Bond, no problem for Texas, as Deandre Moore Jr. caught 6 passes for 97 yards and 2 TDs in Saturday’s win at Vanderbilt.
  • West Virginia WR Traylon Ray has caught a TD pass in three of the last four games.
  • Just when the door was open for Miami QB Cam Ward to distance himself from Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty in the Heisman race, he had his worst statistical game of the season and did not account for one TD in the win over Florida State.
  • Penn State RB Nicholas Singleton has more receiving TDs (4) than rushing TDs (3) this season.
  • Kansas RB Devin Neal began the year with four straight 100-yard rushing games, but he has only topped the 100-yard mark one time in the last four games.  He has scored a rushing TD in each of the Jayhawks’ last five games.
  • Kansas State RB DJ Giddens is on pace to finish the regular season with 1300-plus rushing yards, but it is quite disappointing for his fantasy owners that he has only scored in four of eight games this year.  14 players in the FBS have at least 800 rushing yards, but only two have fewer than six TDs, Giddens (4) and Auburn’s Jarquez Hunter (5).  QB Avery Johnson has rushed for a TD in three consecutive games and has a total of four rushing TDs on the season, while Giddens and Dylan Edwards have combined for seven.
  • Due to the ho-hum statistical Week 9 by Miami QB Cam Ward and Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty, I feel Colorado WR Travis Hunter will see his Heisman odds increase after his 9-153-2 performance against Cincinnati.  RB Isaiah Augusta has scored a rushing TD in three straight games.  Anyone desperate enough for a Colorado running back?
  • Cincinnati RB Corey Kiner is on pace to have back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons, but similar to last year (5), Kiner is not finding the end zone frequent enough, as he has only 2 TDs in 8 games.  35 players have at least 120 rush attempts on the year, and Kiner is one of only two players to have 2 or fewer rushing TDs (Ismail Mahdi, Texas State – 2).

Group 5

  • UTEP RB Jevon Jackson has posted back-to-back 100-yard rushing games and has logged 48 rush attempts in the last two weeks.
  • After rushing for at least 100 yards in four of five games this year, Liberty RB Quinton Cooley only had 9 rush attempts and 37 yards in the Flames’ 27-24 loss at Kennesaw St.  Unfortunately, I do not have a read after this game to know if there is reason for concern, so Cooley’s owners will likely be on edge going into next week’s game against Jacksonville State.
  • Middle Tennessee WR Omari Kelly has totaled at least 100 receiving yards in four of the last six games, but he has game five games without a TD pass.
  • Jacksonville State RB Tre Stewart has rushed for at least 100 yards in three straight games and has scored 10 TDs in the last four games.  QB Tyler Huff has rushed for 7 TDs in the last four games.
  • Old Dominion QB Colton Joseph has proven to be a legitimate fantasy option. In his four games as the starter, Joseph has accounted for 13 TDs (5 rush) and has rushed for at least 68 yards in each of those four games.
  • It’s interesting that we are 9 weeks into the season and consider Ashton Jeanty’s 33-128-1 rushing performance a ‘bad game’.
  • UNLV QB Hajj-Malik Williams has now accounted for at least 3 TDs in five consecutive games.
  • Tulane RB Makhi Hughes carried the ball a season-high 30 times for 195 yards and a TD in the win at North Texas, extending his scoring streak to eight games.
  • North Texas WR DT Sheffield has posted three straight 100-yard receiving games, totaling 28 receptions for 373 yards and 5 TDs.
  • Charlotte WR Omega Blake has caught a TD pass in four of his last five games.
  • Ohio WR Coleman Owen has caught at least 1 TD pass in three of the Bobcats’ last four games.
  • Appalachian State WR Kaedin Robinson has caught 44 passes for 686 yards, but still has not caught a TD pass this year.  57 players have caught at least 40 passes this season and Robinson is the only one in that number without a TD reception.
  • Miami (OH) RB Keyon Mozee has rushed for 100 yards in three consecutive games, but he only has two rushing TDs in eight games this year.  WR Javon Tracy has caught a TD pass in four of five games this year and WR Reggie Virgil has caught a TD pass in three consecutive games.
  • Southern Miss RB Kenyon Clay has scored a rushing TD in four straight games.
  • After a two-game stretch in which Kent State WR Chrishon McCray caught 13 passes for 401 yards and 5 TDs, he has totaled only 6 receptions for 44 yards in the last two games.
  • Western Michigan RB Jaden Nixon has rushed for over 100 yards in five of the Broncos’ last six games.  TE Blake Bosma has now caught a TD pass in four of the last five games.
  • Toledo WR Jerjuan Newton has totaled over 120 receiving yards in three of the last four games, and he has now caught a TD pass in seven of eight games this year.
  • Ball State TE Tanner Koziol has caught at least 8 passes in six consecutive games and has caught a TD pass in five of eight games this year.
  • Eastern Michigan RB Delbert Mimms III has scored a rushing TD in six of eight games this year.
  • Colorado State WR Caleb Goodie has caught a TD pass in three consecutive games, but he has not caught more than three passes in any single game this season.
  • Now that Utah State WR Jalen Royals is out for the year, I would expect Otto Tia to be a hot waiver wire name this week.  In Saturday’s win at Wyoming, Tia led the Aggies in receiving with 6 receptions for 76 yards and a TD.  RB Rahsul Faison has scored a rushing TD in five straight games.
  • Wyoming RB Sam Scott has scored a rushing TD in three of the Cowboys’ last four games.
  • Fresno State RB Elijah Gilliam has scored a rushing TD in five of the Bulldogs’ last six games.
  • San Jose State WR Nick Nash has caught at least one TD pass in every game this season and is averaging 15.3 targets per game.
  • San Diego State RB Marquez Cooper has scored at least one TD in four straight games.
