There are many of you that have already started your CFF season, and to those of you that have not, this week’s waiver wire is a way of tracking a player’s value heading into your CFF season. There wasn’t much to choose from in Week 1, but these names are the best of the bunch:
QUARTERBACKS
Jason Bean, North Texas
Jason Bean took the first snaps at quarterback for the Mean Green against Houston Baptist and accounted for four touchdowns, three passing and one rushing. He completed 11-of-18 pass attempts for 217 yds and added another 48 yds on the ground on three attempts. Teammate Austin Aune did complete 6-of-11 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown, but the job seems to be Bean’s to lose moving forward.
Grant Wells, Marshall
Redshirt freshman quarterback Grant Wells looked comfortable in his first start, completing 16-of-23 passes for 307 yards and four touchdowns in Marshall’s 59-0 win over Eastern Kentucky. Fantasy owners should not expect that type of production from Wells on a weekly basis, but offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey has found his guy to lead the Thundering Herd offense.
RUNNING BACKS
Sandon McCoy, Army
Fullback Sandon McCoy rushed for 50 yards on 15 carries and scored three touchdowns in Army’s 42-0 win over Middle Tennessee. The Black Knights had to overhaul their 2020 schedule, and in doing so, have a much easier road in front of them. In the first 12 weeks of the season, Army plays seven schools from the FCS (3), Sun Belt (2), and CUSA (2).
Deion Hankins, UTEP
Deion Hankins carried the ball 17 times for 113 yards and scored two touchdowns in the Miners’ 24-14 win over Stephen F. Austin. The redshirt freshman running back seems to be the best fantasy option on the roster and should be given consideration as a spot-starter this year. Following a trip to Texas in Week 2, UTEP plays Abilene Christian and LA-Monroe in Weeks 3 & 4.
RECEIVERS
Sean Dykes, Memphis
Senior tight end Sean Dykes made a splash Saturday night catching ten passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns in Memphis’ 37-24 win over Arkansas State. Both he and Damonte Coxie were targeted at least ten times by quarterback Brady White, and if Dykes is going to get that many looks in the passing game moving forward, he is worth adding as a receiver in leagues that combine WR/TE.
