Week 3 Notes & Observations

POWER 5

  • Louisville running backs Jawhar Jordan and Trevion Cooley both look good in the backfield against Florida State, which makes me wonder how their performance will affect Tiyon Evans’ touches moving forward.
  • Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis was seen walking out on the field after the Seminoles victory over Louisville, which makes me think his injury isn’t as bad as first thought.  Receiver Johnny Wilson certainly impressed by catching seven passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns in the win.
  • Syracuse running back Sean Tucker only had 42 rushing yards in the win over Purdue, which was his lowest single-game rushing total since the 2021 season opener against Pitt (29 rushing yards).  Receiver Oronde Gadsden II has caught at least three passes in every game this year and he has found the end zone in two of three games.  Quarterback Garrett Schrader has accounted for at least three touchdowns in all three games this year.
  • Purdue receiver Charlie Jones has caught at least nine passes in every game this year. He has also caught a touchdown pass in every game and his lowest single-game receiving total is 133 yards.
  • Missouri receiver Dominic Lovett it has caught at least six passes in two of three games this year.
  • Oklahoma running back Eric Gray has rushed for at least 100 yards in two of three games this year, while teammate Marcus Major has scored a touchdown in all three of the Sooners’ games.
  • Nebraska receiver Trey Palmer has totaled more than 80 yards receiving in three straight games.
  • There has been a lot of chatter about Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy, but I won’t believe that Michigan has a legit fantasy quarterback until I see it.  Receiver Ronnie Bell has caught at least six passes in back-to-back games.
  • Northwestern running back Evan Hull has been tremendous fantasy value so far through three games, but after the Wildcats’ losses to Duke and Southern Illinois, I wonder about his fantasy value moving forward throughout Big Ten play.
  • Kentucky receiver Dane Key has caught a touchdown pass in each of the Wildcats’ first three games. Teammate Tayvion Robinson has caught at least six passes in two of three games, but has yet to find the end zone.
  • Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett has scored a rushing touchdown in each of the Bulldogs’ first three games this year.
  • West Virginia freshman running back CJ Donaldson has rushed for 173 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries this year. The 6 foot-2 and 240-pound back is averaging 8.6 yards per carry.
  • Virginia quarterback Brennan Armstrong looked good in the opener against Richmond (3 Total TDs), but he hasn’t accounted for a TD in either of the past two games, so I can only assume many owners have him on the chopping block. Maybe upcoming dates with Duke, Louisville, and Georgia Tech will persuade them otherwise.
  • Far as bad as Brennan Armstrong’s numbers have been over the past two games, Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson’s numbers have been worse.  Richardson has only totaled 255 passing yards and 28 rushing yards, while throwing four interceptions and failing to account for a touchdown in the last two.
  • One week after carrying the ball 27 times in the Cyclones’ win at Iowa, running back Jirehl Brock only had seven carries for 76 yards against Ohio.  Brock did not get a carry in the second half, as ISU had a 30-3 lead at halftime.  Receiver Xavier Hutchinson has caught at least eight passes for 93 yards and a touchdown in all three games this season.
  • After missing UCLA’s week 2 game and only totaling 13 carries against South Alabama on Saturday, I’m doubting that running back Zach Charbonnet is close to 100% right now.  Tight end Michael Ezeike is supposedly banged up, and he played against South Alabama, but wasn’t targeted one time.
  • On the season, Ole Miss has five passing touchdowns and 12 rushing touchdowns.  Receiver Malik Heath (2) and tight end Michael Trigg (3) are the only players to catch a touchdown pass this season.
  • Minnesota running back Mohamed Ibrahim has carried the ball at least 20 times in all three games this year. His lowest single-game rushing total is 130 yards and he has scored two touchdowns in every game.
  • Vanderbilt receiver will Shepard has scored a touchdown in all four games this year and he is caught two TD passes in three or four games.  Running back Ray Davis has rushed for at least 87 yards in all four games this year and he has scored a rushing touchdown in three of four games.
  • Oregon quarterback Bo Nix has three rushing touchdowns, while no other player on the team has more than one. Tight end Terrance Ferguson has caught two touchdown passes in each of the last two games.
  • Penn State freshman running back Nick Singleton has rushed for 303 yards and four touchdowns, on only 20 carries, in the past two games.
  • After three games, Alabama running backs have caught four touchdown passes (Gibbs-2, McClellan-2) and the receivers have caught five (Holden-3, Burton-2).
  • Kansas running back Daniel Hishaw Jr. has scored a rushing touchdown in each of the Jayhawks’ first three games this year.
  • Duke running back Jaylen Coleman has scored a rushing touchdown in each of the Blue Devils’ first three games this year.
  • Mississippi State quarterback will Rogers only had 214 passing yards at LSU on Saturday. That was his lowest single-game total since the Bulldogs’ 2020 bowl game against Tulsa that was played in the rain.
  • In Oklahoma State’s first three non-conference games, quarterback Spencer Sanders has thrown 10 touchdown passes and has accounted for 13 touchdowns.  Receiver Braydon Johnson has totaled at least 80 yards receiving in each of the Cowboys’ first three games.
  • Tennessee receiver Jalin Hyatt has caught 16 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns in the last two games.
  • Arkansas running back Raheim Sanders has started the year with three straight 100 yard rushing games and he has carried the ball at least 20 times in every game.  Quarterback KJ Jefferson has scored a rushing touchdown in all three games this year.
  • In the absence of Rodney Hammond Pitt running back Israel Abanikanda has rushed for at least 130 yards and a touchdown in each of the past two games.  Receiver Jarred Wayne has topped the 80 yard mark in each of the Panthers’ first three games this year.
  • Michigan State receiver Keon Coleman leads the team with 29 targets this year, which is twice as more than the next closest player with 12, tight end Daniel Barker.
  • Washington receiver Jalen McMillan has at least 85 receiving yards in each of the Huskies’ first three games this year.  Quarterback Michael Penix has passed for at least 330 yards in all three games this year.
  • Clemson running back Will Shipley has scored two rushing touchdowns at each of the Tigers’ first three games this year, despite not carrying the ball more than 12 times in any one game.
  • Oregon State running back to Deshaun Fenwick has scored a rushing touchdown in each of the Beavers’ first three games this year.
  • After three games, Texas receiver Xavier Worthy has caught 11 passes, but has yet to score.
  • The health of running back Jaylan Knighton has squeezed Thaddeus Franklin out of playing time in the Miami backfield. Against Texas A&M Henry Parrish had 16 rush attempts, Knighton had 14, while Franklin had one.
  • Well the Texas A&M offense has struggled to score points over the first three weeks of the season, running back Devon Achane has scored in every game.
  • Utah running back Tavion Thomas only has one 100-yard rushing game so far, but he has scored in every game, while tight and Brant Kuithe has caught a touchdown pass in each of the Utes’ first three games.
  • USC quarterback Caleb Williams has accounted for four touchdowns in each of the Trojans’ last two games, while receiver Jordan Addison has caught a touchdown pass in each of the first three games.
  • Arizona receiver Jacob Cowing has caught a touchdown pass in each of the Wildcats’ first three games.
  • Arizona State running back Xazavian Valliday has rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown in each of the Sun Devils’ first three games.

FULL FBS

  • After running for 100+ yards in Air Force’s first two games, fullback Brad Roberts only totaled 54 yards on the ground in Friday’s loss at Wyoming.
  • In Friday’s win over Air Force, Wyoming running back Titus Swen had his first 100 yard rushing game of the year and has now scored touchdowns in back-to-back games.  Receiver Joshua Cobbs has caught at least five passes in each of the Cowboys’ last three games.
  • It seems we might be getting some clarity in the Cincinnati backfield, where Charles McClelland has led the team in rushing attempts in the last two games, while preseason projected starter Corey Kiner seems to be the RB2, and he has scored a rushing touchdown in all three of the Bearcats’ games this year.  McClelland has scored three touchdowns in the last two games.
  • Coastal Carolina running back Reese White had two carries for 77 yards against Buffalo. One of those runs was a 67 yarder that resulted in a fumble. White had two fumbles and I don’t think he got another touch in the game after his second.
  • Buffalo receiver Justin Marshall has stopped the 80 yard mark and scored at least one touchdown in each of the past two games.
  • Players like Old Dominion tight end Zack Kuntz is what makes CFF such a challenge.  Kuntz totaled just two catches going into Weeks 3, but caught six passes for 83 yards and a touchdown against Virginia.  Not only did some owners lose patience to start him, but some likely already dropped him after he failed to make a catch last week.  Receiver Ali Jennings is averaging 139 receiving yards per game.
  • In each of the last two games, Ball State running back Carson Steele has gotten at least 25 rushing attempts.
  • South Alabama running back La’Damian Webb has rushed for at least 90 yards and a touchdown in each of the Jaguars first three games.
  • After a tough game on the road at Kansas State, I still feel that Tulane running back Tyjae Spears is a ‘hold’.
  • UNLV receiver Kyle Williams has caught a touchdown pass in each of the Rebels’ first three games.  Running back Aidan Robbins has scored seven touchdowns in three games.
  • Georgia Southern running back Jalen White has scored two rushing touchdowns in each of the Eagles’ first three games this year.
  • Liberty receiver Demario Douglas has caught two touchdown passes in two of three games this year.  Quarterback Kaidon Salter has rushed for at least 65 yards in all three games this year.
  • Marshall running back Khalan Laborn posted his third consecutive 100 yard rushing game this season, but there will be concerns about his utilization moving forward with the return of Rasheen Ali.  Ali did not play in Saturday’s game at Bowling Green.
  • East Carolina running back Keaton Mitchell has rushed for at least 160 yards and a touchdown in each of his last two games.
  • Tulsa quarterback Davis Brin has thrown at least three touchdown passes in every game this year and he has topped the 400 yard mark twice.  Receiver Keylon Stokes has caught at least eight passes in all three games this year. He has also topped the 130-yard mark and scored a touchdown in all three games.  Teammate JuanCarlos Santana has top the 85-yard mark every week and caught a touchdown in all three games.
  • Middle Tennessee running back Frank Peasant has rushed for at least 90 yards and two touchdowns in each of the Blue Raiders’ last two games.
  • Charlotte quarterback Chris Reynolds returned from injury and threw for 400 yards and five touchdowns in an upset win over Georgia State.  Receiver Grant Dubose has five receiving touchdowns on the year and his fantasy stock is back up with the return of Reynolds.  He has caught a touchdown pass in three of four games this year.
  • SMU receiver Rashee Rice has caught at least eight passes for 130 yards in each of the Mustangs’ first three games.
  • South Florida receiver Xavier Weaver has caught at least five passes in every game this year.
  • Rice running back Ari Broussard has scored a rushing touchdown in each of the Owls’ first three games this year.
  • UCF receiver Javon Baker has topped the 80-yard receiving mark in each of the Knights’ first three games this year. Quarterback John Rhys Plumlee has rushed for at least 80 yards in all three games, and running back Isaiah Bowser has scored a rushing touchdown in all three games.
  • FAU running back Larry McCammon has rushed for at least 90 yards in three or four games this year, and receiver LaJohntay Wester has caught a touchdown pass in each of the Owls’ last three games.
  • Over the last two games, Brenden Brady has separated himself as UTSA’s RB1, carrying the ball 40 times for 146 yards and three touchdowns.
  • UTEP receiver Tyrin Smith has caught at least seven passes in three of four games this year.
  • Hawaii running back Dedrick Parson has scored a rushing touchdown in three of the first four games of the year, and in my opinion, he is the only fantasy relevant player in that offense.
