Week 4 Notes & Observations

Power 5

  • I think we have seen enough of the Virginia defense to know they are going to be very bad this year, which is great if you have QB Brennan Armstrong or any of the UVA receivers.
  • Wake Forest WR Jaquarii Roberson (4-91-0) probably posted numbers decent enough that his owners are still debating what to do with him, which is a decision that must heavily be weighted against your leagues specs and roster requirements.
  • Syracuse RB Sean Tucker has rushed for at least 130 yards in three of four games this year.  Garrett Shrader likely secured himself another start at quarterback.  The Orange play Florida State next.
  • After getting at least 15 carries in each of the last three games, BC RB Pat Garwo should get some waiver consideration.
  • Missouri RB Tyler Badie has now scored at least 2 TDs in three of four games.
  • In the last two weeks, Pitt QB Kenny Pickett has accounted for 12 TDs (11 pass, 1 run) and WR Jordan Addison has caught 12 passes for 303 yards and 6 TDs.
  • Minnesota gave Ohio State everything they could handle in Week 1 and dominated Colorado in Week 3, but they only beat Miami (OH) by 5 one Week 2 and lost to Bowling Green on Saturday. Not a good look for the Gophers and I wouldn’t have a Minnesota WR on my roster.
  • Penn State QB Sean Clifford and WR Jahan Dotson had good outings against Villanova, but Noah Cain only had one rushing attempt.  After the game, HC James Franklin mentioned that Cain was a little dinged up and missed some practice time last week.
  • LSU WR Kayshon Boutte hasn’t topped the 100-yard mark since the opener against UCLA, but he has caught a TD pass in all four games and has three multiple-TD games.  QB Max Johnson has thrown at least 3 TD passes in all four games this year.
  • Mississippi State WR Makai Polk has caught at least 8 passes in three of four games.
  • It’s time we start taking Texas WR Xavier Worthy seriously after catching 3 TD passes in the Longhorns’ 70-35 win over Texas Tech.
  • Texas Tech QB Tyler Shough is expected to miss a few weeks with a shoulder injury.
  • It seems as if Zach Evans will get the RB1 workload that we were hoping for in the preseason.  One week after catching 5 passes for 95 yards and 2 TDs against Cal, WR Quentin Johnston didn’t catch a pass against SMU.
  • I would expect top see Tyler Van Dyke start at quarterback for Miami if D’Eriq King is out longer than initially thought.
  • If Cameron Rising couldn’t do anything against Washington State, I don’t expect him to be much of a fantasy asset for the remainder of the year.  I also felt that matchup against Washington State was an opportunity for RB Micah Bernard to cement himself as the Utes’ RB1, and that did not happen.
  • Louisville QB Malik Cunningham has scored 2 rushing TDs in all four games this year.
  • I’m convinced that Clemson needs to move on from QB DJ Uiagalelei.  He just doesn’t have any confidence in the pocket.  Sure seems like a fantasy bust to me.
  • After four games, it seems as if Arkansas WR Treylon Burks will be a boom or bust player week-to-week, which most owners can live with if he has more ’boom’ weeks than ‘bust’ weeks.  Take away his TD receptions of 91 and 85 yards, and Burks has caught 17 passes for 197 yards in four games, an average of 4.3 rec. and 49.3 yds.  As the Razorbacks’ top WR, he’s a must-start every week, but you might have to live through a handful of poor outings.
  • I do not want to scare anyone off of Iowa State RB Breece Hall, but we’re almost in the situation I did not want his owners to be during the 2021 season.  My fear was that the Cyclones would fall out of contention for the Big 12 title and make a conscious effort not to overwork Hall, who carried the ball 27 times for 190 yards and 2 TDs against Baylor.  We’re not at that point yet, but starting conference play 0-1 isn’t good.
  • Baylor QB Gerry Bohanon has accounted for 3 or more TDs in three straight games.
  • Going into Saturday’s matchup against Kansas, RB Mataeo Durant had scored 7 of Duke’s 12 rushing touchdowns, but against the Jayhawks, he only scored one of their six rushing TDs.  He has totaled over 140 yards of offense in three of four games this year.
  • It will be interesting to see what Auburn does at quarterback moving forward after Bo Nix was benched for TJ Finley against Georgia State.  RB Tank Bigsby had a 4th quarter fumble that landed him on the bench at the end of the game, but I feel he is safe.
  • UCLA RBs:  Zach Charbonnet 23-118-1; Brittain Brown 8-66-0.  There seems to be clarity in the pecking order.  Or is there?  It seems like it to me based on production through four games.
  • Oklahoma State WR Tay Martin returned from injury and has caught at least 6 passes for 100 yards and a TD in both of his starts this year.  RB Jaylen Warren has gotten at least 27 carries in each of the last two games.
  • Well, the Anthony Richardson hype has lost some steam since has hasn’t played in either of the last two games, which is good news for Emory Jones’ owners.  Jones posted his first 30-point game against Tennessee on Saturday.
  • Anyone still holding South Carolina RB Kevin Harris should move him out.  He’s averaging 34.0 rushing yards per game and 2.9 yards per attempt.
  • Georgia Tech went back to QB Jeff Sims in Saturday’s win over North Carolina.  Even though Sims had 3 rushing TDs, I’m not feeling optimistic about offensive consistency moving forward.  However, the Yellow Jackets do have some good matchups over the next month.
  • I have received a lot of emails and DMs about Ohio State WR Chris Olave given his lack of production over the past two weeks, but he’s a definite hold for me.  How could you bail on Ohio State’s most explosive receiver?!?!
  • Cal RB Damien Moore has scored a TD in all four games this season.
  • Richard Newton did not have a carry against Cal Saturday night, as it was Sean McGrew who led Washington in rushing with 53 yards and 2 TDs on 16 carries.  He has scored 2 TDs in back-to-back games.
  • Arizona State RB Rachaad White has scored at least one TD in all four games this season.  He has yet to run for 100 yards, but he has totaled over 100 yards of offense in each of the Sun Devils’ last three games.
  • It’s time to move away from Colorado RB Jarek Broussard if you have not yet done so.  The Buffaloes’ offense is bad.
  • I’ll try to make another QB prediction here:  When Jaxson Dart returns from injury, he should be the USC starting quarterback.  Kedon Slovis isn’t the guy.  All of the equity he built up during his freshman season has long since gone up in smoke.

Group 5

  • Fantasy owners were left wondering how big Camerun People’s numbers would have been had he not lost a fumble in the second half against Marshall.  Nate Noel finished the game for the Mountaineers and finished with 187 rushing yards.  WR Corey Sutton has caught at least 7 passes in three consecutive games.
  • I feel really good about Marshall RB Rasheen Ali for the rest of the year.  He already has 9 TDs in four games.
  • Liberty WR Demario Douglas has caught at least 6 passes for 60 yards and a TD in three of four games this year.
  • I am not putting much credibility into Temple RB Kyle Dobbins’ 3-TD game against Wagner.
  • Utah State RB Calvin Tyler Jr. has back-to-back 100-yard rushing games and has scored in three of four games this year.
  • FIU WR Tyrese Chambers is averaging 72.3 receiving yards per game and has scored in three of four games.  QB Max Bortenschlager has thrown 2 TD passes in all four games this year.
  • SMU WRs Danny Gray and Rashee Rice have both scored in all four games this year.  QB Tanner Mordecai has thrown at least 4 TDs in all four games this year.
  • Army QB Christian Anderson had one of the biggest under-the-radar performances of the weekend, rushing for 236 yards and 2 TDs in a win over Miami (OH).
  • I am not sure why Coastal Carolina RB Sherri Jones did not play against UMass, but he wasn’t even dressed out.
  • Toledo RB Bryant Koback has gone back-to-back weeks without a TD.  He hasn’t gone consecutive weeks without a TD since October 2019.
  • Western Michigan WR Skyy Moore has caught at least 9 passes in each of the Broncos’ last two games.  RB LaDarius Jefferson has scored a rushing TD in all four games this year.
  • Northern Illinois WR Tyrice Ritchie showed some signs of life, catching 7 passes for 76 yards against Maine, but he still has yet to score a touchdown this year.
  • Was Kent State WR Dante Cephus’ 10-151-1 game against Maryland the performance we have been waiting for from a KSU receiver heading into conference play?  Ja’Shaun Poke returned to action and caught 2 passes for 17 yards.
  • Colorado State RB David Bailey left Saturday’s game at Iowa with an injury.  No word on the severity and if he will be out for any length of time.
  • San Diego State RB Greg Bell left Saturday’s game against Towson very early after a shoulder injury.  After the game, HC Brady Hoke didn’t have any doubts that Bell would be available for their matchup against New Mexico in two weeks.
  • UTSA WR Zachary Franklin has caught a TD pass in all four games this season.
  • Memphis RB Brandon Thomas has received at least 16 rushing attempts in every game this season.
  • Moving into conference play, it seems Tucker Gregg is the RB to own at Georgia State (12-150-1 vs. Auburn).
  • I thought Tulsa RB Deneric Prince would get way more than 8 carries against Arkansas State.  His lack of utilization in that matchup is worrisome and would cause me to move Prince out of my roster.
  • After his 4-TD game last week, Louisiana freshman RB Montrell Johnson led the Ragin Cajuns with 13 rushing attempts against Georgia Southern.
  • RB Kevin Marks only had one rushing attempt after opening the Bulls’ first drive of the second half with a fumble.  Teammate Dylan McDuffie only had five rushing attempts after Marks’ fumble, which means up until Marks’ fumble, carries were split 11-to-11.  Seems we have a split backfield.
  • Anyone that started Houston RB Alton McCaskill, had to be banking on a big game against Navy, but teammate Ta’Zhawn Henry scored both of the Cougars’ rushing TDs in the 28-20 win.
  • Hawaii WR Nick Mardner has at least 97 receiving yards in four consecutive games and has scored in three of his last four games.
  • UAB TE Gerrit Prince has caught a TD pass in three of four games this year.
  • UTEP RB Deion Hankins made his return from injury Saturday night and split carries with Ronald Awatt.
