Week 4 Notes & Observations

POWER 5

  • After catching 20 passes and four touchdowns in the first two games of the year, receiver Bryce Ford-Wheaton has seven catches for 70 yards and no touchdowns in the last two games. Receiver Kaden Prather has caught at least six passes in three consecutive games.
  • Illinois running back Chase Brown has started the year with four consecutive 100 yard rushing games, and he has carried the ball at least 19 times in every game. Receiver Isaiah Williams has been hit or miss, having topped the hundred yard mark twice, but failing to reach the 30 yard mark in the Illini’s other two games. Quarterback Tommy DeVito has thrown at least two touchdown passes in each of the Illini’s first four games of the year.
  • Syracuse receiver Oronde Gadsden has caught at least six passes for 100 yards in back-to-back games.
  • Clemson receiver Beaux Collins has caught a touchdown pass in each of the Tigers’ first four games of the year, while running back Will Shipley has scored at least one rushing touchdown in each of the first four games.
  • Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman has thrown 13 touchdown passes in the three games in which he has played this year. Receiver Jahmal Banks has been the surprise in the Wake Forest offense, having caught a touchdown pass in three or four games this year, and will go into Week 5 having caught two touchdown passes in back-to-back games.
  • In Rodney Hammond’s absence, Pitt running back Israel Abanikanda, over the last three games, has averaged 25 rush attempts and 154.7 rushing yards, while totaling six touchdowns. Tight end Gavin Bartholomew has not caught more than one pass in three of four games this year.
  • With running back Taye McWilliams injured, Baylor running back Richard Reese has carried the ball at least 19 times in each of the last two games, and he scored four touchdowns, while averaging 117 rushing yards per game.
  • Iowa State receiver Xavier Hutchinson has caught at least eight passes in all four games this year.
  • Duke running back Jaylen Coleman has scored a touchdown in each of the Blue Devils’ first four games this year, despite getting 11 or fewer touches in every game. Quarterback/receiver Jordan Moore has caught at least five passes in three of four games this year and has scored a touchdown in three consecutive games.
  • Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels has accounted for at least three touchdowns in three consecutive games, but surprisingly, has accounted for five touchdowns in each of the last two games. Running back Daniel Hishaw has scored at least one touchdown in every game this year, despite not getting more than 11 touches in any one game.
  • Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett (4) and tight end Brock Bowers (3) have combined for more rushing touchdowns than running backs Kendall Milton (3) and Kenny McIntosh (3). Bennett did not attempt 30 or more passes in any of the 11 regular season games in which he played last year, but has attempted at least 30 passes in three of four games this year.
  • Auburn running back Tank Bigsby has scored at least one touchdown in three or four games this year, but he has only totaled 134 rushing yards in three games against FBS opponents.
  • Mississippi State quarterback Will Rogers has thrown at least four touchdown passes in three or four games this year. Receiver Caleb Ducking has caught a touchdown pass in three of four games.
  • TCU running back Kendre Miller has scored a rushing touchdown in each of the Horned Frogs’ first three games this year. Receiver Quentin Johnston is averaging 24.3 receiving yards per game after three games, so in redraft leagues, he has probably seen his final days on a fantasy roster this year, because there doesn’t seem to be much optimism for any consistency in the coming weeks.
  • Notre Dame tight and Michael Mayer has caught a touchdown pass in each of the Irish his last three games. Running back Audric Estime has scored a rushing touchdown in three or four games this year.
  • North Carolina receiver Josh Downs has caught two touchdown passes in each of the two games in which he has played this year. Downs’ return signified the end of Kobe Paysour’s fantasy production. Paysour caught one pass in Saturday’s loss to Notre Dame, after catching 13 passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns in the two games the Tar Heels’ offense was without Downs.
  • Miami running backs Henry Parrish and Jaylan Knighton were both injured in Saturday’s loss to Middle Tennessee. Knighton has an ankle injury, but I am not sure of the details about the injury to Parrish. Quarterback Tyler van Dyke has thrown a total of two touchdown passes in three games against FBS opponents this season. He was benched for Jake Garcia on Saturday.
  • Minnesota running back Mohamed Ibrahim has rushed for at least 100 yards in each of the Gophers’ first four games this season and has scored at least one rushing touchdown in every game.
  • In two games against Power 5 competition this year, Michigan State running backs Jerek Broussard and Jalen Berger have combined for 66 rushing yards.
  • After catching six passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns in the season opener against Murray State, Texas Tech receiver Jerand Brandley has failed to top the 50-yard mark in each of the Red Raiders’ last three games.
  • Indiana receiver Cam Camper has caught at least eight passes in three of four games this year.
  • Ole Miss running back Zach Evans left Saturday’s game against Tulsa with an injury, and I am unsure about the severity. Quinshon Judkins has rushed for at least 87 yards in all four games this year and has posted back-to-back 2-TD games. Receiver Malik Heath has caught a touchdown pass in three of four games this year.
  • Cal receiver Jeremiah Hunter has caught at least five passes in each of the Bears’ first four games this year.
  • Arizona receiver Jacob Cowing has caught a touchdown pass in all four games this season, and he has caught at least seven passes in three of four games. Running back Michael Wiley has scored a rushing touchdown and three consecutive games.
  • Kansas State running back Deuce Vaughn has gone back-to-back games without scoring a touchdown. Last year, he scored at least one touchdown in 12 of 13 games. The last time he went back-to-back games without a touchdown was Oct. 31-Nov. 7 in 2020.  The Wildcats have scored at least 30 points eighteen times since 2020 and Saturday’s 41-34 win over Oklahoma was the only 30-plus point game in which Vaughn has failed to score a touchdown.
  • Arkansas quarterback KJ Jefferson has rushed for a touchdown in all four of the Razorbacks’ games this year.
  • For as bad as the Texas A&M offense has looked, running back Devon Achane has scored a touchdown in every game.  Receiver Ainias Smith will miss the rest of the season with a broken leg.
  • USC running back Travis Dye has rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown in three consecutive games. Receiver Jordan Addison has been held to fewer than 70 receiving yards in three of four games, but he has scored in every game and has two multiple-TD games.
  • Oregon State running back to Sean Fenwick has 63 or fewer rushing yards in three of four games, but he has scored a rushing touchdowns in each of the Beavers’ first four games.  Put running back Jam Griffin on your watchlist.
  • I know Northwestern running back Evan Hull has had a strong start, but I don’t know how anyone could be excited about his fantasy potential moving forward, taking into account the Wildcats’ losses to Duke, Southern Illinois, and Miami, OH the last three weeks.
  • After a slow start Louisville quarterback Malik Cunningham has rushed for at least 113 yards in each of the Cardinals’ last three games, and he has totaled five rushing touchdowns in the last two. Running back Tiyon Evans has scored a rushing touchdown in each of the first three games in which he has played this year.
  • The further we get away from week one, the more receiver Kazmeir Allen’s 10-catch performance against Bowling Green looks like an outlier.
  • Ohio State receiver Emeka Egbuka has caught a touchdown pass in each of the Buckeyes’ first four games, and he is gone over the 100-yard mark in each of the last three.
  • Purdue quarterback Aiden O’Connell is reportedly dealing with a rib injury and could miss this week’s game at Minnesota. Austin Burton could get another start.
  • My Alabama thoughts:  Stock Up—> receiver JaCorey Brooks and running back Jase McClellan.  Holding Steady—> running back Jahmyr Gibbs. The Crimson Tide are now entering the toughest part of their schedule and I am not anticipating a lot of rotation in the coming weeks.
  • Boston College receiver Zay Flowers has caught at least seven passes in three of four games this year.
  • After carrying the ball 13 times for 131 yards in BYU’s 38-24 win over Wyoming, could Miles Davis be the new RB1 for the Cougars?
  • Reportedly, Utah running back Tavion Thomas was suspended for the first half of the Utes’ matchup at Arizona State. Thomas finished as the team’s leading rusher with 60 yards on 11 carries, but he didn’t do much to help his fantasy owners.

FULL FBS

  • In the absence of Reese White, who was a late scratch, and Brayden Bennett, who is still a no-show, Coastal Carolina running back CJ Beasley carried the ball 25 times for 142 yards in the win over Georgia State.
  • Georgia State receiver Robert Lewis has caught a touchdown pass in each of the Panthers’ first four games of the year.
  • Buffalo receiver Quian Williams has caught at least six passes and a touchdown in each of the Bulls’ last three games.
  • Kent State receiver Devontez Walker has caught a touchdown pass in three or four games this year, while running back Marquez Cooper has scored a rushing touchdown in three or four games this year.  The Kent State offense’s stock is on the rise with the Golden Flashes headed into conference play.
  • SMU receiver Jake Bailey looks like the complement we’ve been waiting for opposite Rashee Rice. And at running back, Camar Wheaton is not eating into Tre Siggers’ workload. Siggers has 19 rushing attempts in each of the Mustangs’ last two games.
  • It’s been hard to get a read on the Ohio receivers, as quarterback Kurtis Rourke has thrown four touchdown passes against the Bobcats’ two non-Power 5 opponents. I would think that is a good sign for Rourke’s fantasy potential heading into conference play, but identifying the receivers with the most fantasy appeal remains a challenge.  Tight end Tyler Foster is the only player on the roster that has caught a touchdown pass in more than one game.
  • Middle Tennessee running back Frank Peasant’s fantasy stock continues to be on the rise after the Blue Raiders’ upset win at Miami. In that game, Peasant carried the ball 19 times for 74 yards and a touchdown. He has rushed for at least 70 yards and a touchdown in three consecutive games. Quarterback Chase Cunningham has now accounted for three touchdowns in back-to-back games.
  • Cincinnati running back Corey Kiner has scored a rushing touchdown in each of the Bearcats’ first four games this year, but he has failed to reach the 40-yard mark in each of the last three games. Receiver Tyler Scott has caught a touchdown pass in each of the last three games, and he has caught at least eight passes and gone over the 100-yard mark in each of the last two games. Receiver Ben Bryant has passed for at least 325 yards in three of four games this year.
  • Memphis running back Brandon Thomas and tight end Caden Prieskorn have scored at least one touchdown in each of the Tigers’ last three games.
  • James Madison receiver Kris Thornton was the center of attention for the Appalachian State defense on Saturday, and as a result, he was only targeted three times. Quarterback Todd Centeio has accounted for at least three touchdowns in each of the Dukes’ first three games this year.
  • Western Kentucky quarterback Austin Reed has accounted for at least three scores in each of the Hilltoppers’ first four games this year.
  • Colorado State quarterback Clay Millen left with an injury to his throwing shoulder in the second quarter of Saturday’s loss to Sacramento State. Millen has taken 24 sacks in 14 quarters of playing time this season.
  • Central Florida quarterback John Rhys Plumlee has rushed for at least 80 yards in each of the Knights’ first four games this year and has scored a rushing touchdown in three of four games.
  • Rice running back Ari Broussard has scored at least one rushing touchdown in each of the Owls’ first four games this year.
  • After rushing for 345 yards in the previous two games, ECU running back Keaton Mitchell ran for 5 yards on five carries against Navy. Mitchell left the game in the third quarter with an injury, but surprisingly he only had four first-half rush attempts. Tight end Ryan Jones has caught a touchdown pass in three consecutive games.
  • The Georgia Southern defense has allowed a 100 yard rusher in all four games this season.
  • Ball State running back Carson Steele has topped 100 yard mark in each of the Cardinals’ last three games.
  • Liberty running back Dae Dae Hunter has scored a rushing touchdown in three consecutive games.
  • Old Dominion receiver Ali Jennings has 24 receptions this year and is averaging 23.3 yards per catch, the best of any player in the nation with at least 15 receptions (179 players).
  • UNLV running back Aidan Robbins has scored at least one rushing touchdown in every game this season, totaling eight touchdowns in four games. Receiver Kyle Williams has caught a touchdown pass in all four games this year.
  • There hasn’t ben any consistency from the Utah State passing game, which makes their receivers less appealing moving into the heat of their conference schedule.
  • Hawaii running back Dedrick Parson has scored a rushing touchdown in four of five games this year, but I don’t know how anyone can start him with confidence because of how inefficient the offense has been. It might be time to leverage his performance over the past two weeks into a midseason trade deal.
  • Texas State receiver Ashtyn Hawkins has caught a touchdown pass in each of the Bobcats’ first four games.
  • Marshall running back Rasheen Ali’s return is still a mystery, so until then, fantasy owners must start Khalan Laborn. Laborn has rushed for at least 100 yards and a touchdown in each of the Thundering Herd’s first four games.
  • South Alabama running back La’Damian Webb has totaled at least 100 yards from scrimmage and scored a touchdown in each of the Jaguars’ first four games.
  • Miami, OH receiver Mac Hippenhammer has caught a touchdown pass in each of the Redhawks’ last three games.
  • Florida Atlantic receiver LaJohntay Wester has caught a touchdown pass in each of the Owls’ last four games, and he has totaled seven touchdowns during that stretch.
