Week 4 Notes & Observations

Power 5

  • Wisconsin RB Chez Mellusi suffered a leg injury in Saturday’s game against Purdue and is expected to miss the reminder of the 2023 season.
  • Purdue RB Tyrone Tracy has scored a rushing TD in all for games this year.  Teammate Devin Mockobee only has 16 rush attempts and 57 yards on the ground in the last two games combined.
  • Virginia WR Malik Washington has posted three consecutive 100-yard receiving games.
  • In three games against P5 opponents, Florida State RB Trey Benson has yet to post a 50-yard rushing performance.
  • Michigan RB Donovan Edwards has yet to score a TD this season.
  • TCU RB Emani Bailey has rushed for at least 125 yards in three of four games this year.
  • Texas Tech QB Tyler Shough suffered a broken fibula on Saturday, which means Behren Morton will take over at quarterback.  Morton was only 13-of-37 for 158 yards against West Virginia.
  • Oregon WR Troy Franklin has posted three 100-yard games in four weeks.
  • Utah RB Ja’Quinden Jackson has been bothered by an ankle injury and is pushing through it instead of resting.  Perhaps, the Utes’ Week 6 bye presents a window of opportunity for Jackson to get healthy, and at the very least, offers his fantasy owners a glimmer of hope for a strong finish.
  • Louisville RB Jawhar Jordan has scored at least 1 TD in all four games this season, and he is averaging 152.8 scrimmage yards per game.  WR Jamari Thrash has caught a TD pass in all four games this season.
  • Duke RB Jordan Waters has scored a TD in all four games this year and has scored 2 TDs in three consecutive games.
  • Wake Forest QB Mitch Griffis has thrown 5 INTs in the last two games.
  • Arizona QB Jayden de Laura left Saturday’s game against Stanford with a leg injury and the severity is unknown ahead of the Wildcats’ upcoming matchup against Washington.
  • Washington State QB Cam Ward has accounted for 4 or more TDs in three of four games this year.  WR Kyle Williams has caught a TD pass in all four games this season.  WR Lincoln Victor left Saturday’s game against Oregon State early in the first quarter after suffering a lower body injury, most likely an ankle sprain.
  • LSU WR Malik Nabers has caught a TD pass in three consecutive games and has 369 yards receiving in the last two games.  WR Brian Thomas has caught a TD pass in three of four games.
  • True freshman RB Parker Jenkins carried the ball 20 times for 105 yards and 3 TDs in Houston’s 38-7 win over Sam Houston State.
  • In Minnesota’s last three games, freshman RB Darius Taylor is averaging 176.3 rushing yards per game.
  • South Carolina WR Xavier Legette has posted three 100-yard receiving games this year.
  • While Texas is likely to use both Jonathan Brooks and CJ Baxter, it seems as if Brooks is the lead back right now.
  • Ohio State WR Marvin Harrison Jr. suffered a sprained ankle in the Buckeyes’ win at Notre Dame, but with a bye week upcoming, it’s unlikely he’ll miss any time.
  • North Carolina RB Omarion Hampton has scored a rushing TD in all four games this season.
  • I am expecting Pitt RB Rodney Hammond to get a lot of work next week against Virginia Tech.
  • UCF WR Kobe Hudson has totaled over 130 receiving yards in three consecutive games.
  • Let’s see if Kansas State RB DJ Giddens’ performance against UCF results in him getting a heavier workload moving forward when Treshaun Ward returns.  I am projecting that he will.  Not only did Giddens run for 207 yards and 4 TDs, but he led the team with 8 receptions for 86 yards.
  • Five of USC WR Brenden Rice’s 12 receptions have resulted in a TD.  Four of WR Tahj Washington’s 10 receptions have resulted in a TD.
  • Washington WR Jalen McMillan did not play in Saturday’s game against Cal, but head coach Kalen DeBoersaid said he expects McMillan to play in next week’s matchup against Arizona.  WR Rome Odunze finished the 2022 season with 1,088 receiving yards.  Through four games of 2023, Odunze is already halfway to that number with 544 yards on 27 receptions.

Group 5

  • Georgia State RB Marcus Carroll has scored 8 TDs in four games and is averaging 24 rush attempts per game.
  • Coastal Carolina QB Grayson McCall hasn’t accounted for more than 1 TD in any of the Chanticleers’ three games against FBS competition this year.
  • Air Force FB Emmanuel Michel the last two games:  61 attempts for 254 yards and  6 TDs.
  • San Jose State RB Kairee Robinson has scored at least one rushing TD in all four games in which he has played this year.
  • In George Holani’s absence, Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty has scored 5 TDs in the last two games.  WR Eric McAlister has caught 11 passes for 233 yards and 3 TDs in the last two games.
  • I can see fantasy owners parting ways with SMU RB Jaylan Knighton and having extreme doubts about QB Preston Stone.
  • Marshall RB Rasheen Ali has scored at least 2 TDs in all three games this year.
  • Toledo QB Dequan Finn left the game against WMU with an apparent shoulder injury.  WR Jerjuan Newton has caught a TD pass in all four games this year.  RB Penny Boone has rushed for 334 yards in the last two games.
  • Louisiana Tech WR Cyrus Allen has bounced back with two solid outings (5-82-1 & 6-102-1) since his slow start.
  • FAU WR Lajohntay Wester has caught at least 12 passes for 100 yards in three consecutive games.
  • Miami (OH) WR Gage Larvadain left the game after the Redhawks opening drive and did not return.  There should be an update on his status early this week.
  • New Mexico RB Jacory Croskey-Merrit has scored 7 TDs in four games.
  • The fantasy outlook for Eastern Michigan RB Samson Evans doesn’t look good.  He has totaled 11 rushing attempts in the last two weeks.
  • After leading Central Michigan to a 34-30 win at South Alabama, Jase Bauer has likely overtaken Bert Emanuel as the Chippewas’ starting quarterback.
  • Liberty tight end Bentley Hanshaw has caught a TD pass in three of four games this year.
  • True freshman QB Jaylen Raynor led Arkansas State to a 44-37 win over Southern Miss.  Raynor finished 11-of-21 for 233 yards and 3 TDs passing, and he added 97 yards and 2 TDs rushing.
  • Colorado State WR Tory Horton is averaging 11 receptions per game after the Rams’ first three games.
  • Utah State WR Terrell Vaughn has caught at least one TD pass in all four games this season and he has caught at least 10 passes in three of four games.
  • Fresno State WRs Jalen Moss, Erik Brooks, and Jaelen Gill have all caught a TD pass in three of four games this year.
  • After combining for 8 TD receptions in the first three games of the year, Hawaii WRs Pofele Ashlock and Steven McBride have failed to score in each of the last two games.
