Joe’s Week 7 Notes & Observations

Power 5

  • Northwestern RB Cam Porter has scored a TD in four consecutive games in which he has played, but he has only totaled 38 rushing yards in the last two weeks.
  • Maryland QB Billy Edwards had thrown at least 2 TD passes in five consecutive games until Friday night’s game against Northwestern.
  • It was quite obvious that Utah QB Cam Rising was not physically ready to play Friday night against Arizona State.  Some guys just cannot avoid the injury bug and Rising is one of those guys.  Supposedly, he can still return for another season of eligibility, but I would not want any Rising stock in 2025.  He will be 26 years old next year, and if you are still playing college ball at that age, you probably aren’t good enough to start at a major college program.  RB Micah Bernard is averaging 128.6 rushing yards per game over the last five games.
  • Arizona State RB Cam Skattebo has scored 2 TDs in three of the last four games, and given the offensive system the Sun Devils employ, ASU RBs should have a ton of fantasy appeal next season, too.  I would not be surprised to see HC Kenny Dillingham target a workhorse RB in the transfer portal following the 2024 season.  WR Jordan Tyson has caught a TD pass in three of the last four games.
  • With his TD reception against Iowa, Washington WR Denzel Boston has caught at least one TD pass in six of seven games this year.
  • RB Kaleb Johnson scored three TDs in the Hawkeyes’ win over Washington, which means his scoring streak has extended to six games this season with five multiple-TD performances.
  • In Wisconsin’s win over Rutgers, RB Tawee Walker carried the ball 24 times for 198 yards and 3 TDs. In his last three games, Walker has scored 8 TDs.
  • In three games against non-P4 teams, UNC RB Omarion Hampton has scored six TDs, but in four games against P4 competition, Hampton has scored only one TD.
  • In Missouri’s 45-3 win over UMass, RB Marcus Carroll carried the ball 15 times for 91 yards and 3 TDs. Reportedly, RB Nate Noel did not play due to back tightness, but now fantasy owners will be speculation about the backfield situation leading up to next week’s game against Auburn.  Because of Carroll’s performance, Noel wouldn’t be an option for me next week.
  • Clemson WR Antonio Williams has caught a TD pass in four of the last five games, while RB Phil Mafah has topped the 100-yard rushing mark in four of his last five games. QB Cade Klubnik has accounted for at least 3 TDs in four of the Tigers’ last five games.
  • Alabama QB Jalen Milroe has rushed for a TD in every game this season and has scored two rushing TDs in five of six games this year.
  • After scoring 9 TDs in the first three games of the year, UCF RB RJ Harvey has scored only two TDs in Knights’ last three games.
  • Louisville RB Isaac Brown has posted back-to back 100-yard rushing games, and Saturday’s contest against Virginia marked the first time this season Brown was given more than 13 rush attempts (20).
  • In Saturday’s 50-49 OT win over Purdue, Illinois RB Josh McCray, in the absence of Kaden Feagin, ran for 78 yards and 2 TDs, while catching 3 passes for 46 yards and a TD.  Could McCray have earned the starting role with that performance?  That remains to be seen, but I would be surprised if he didn’t at least create a timeshare.
  • So, the Cal defense made up for their worst two quarters of the season (2H vs. Miami) to put an end to Pitt QB Eli Holstein’s streak of games with at least 3 TDs.  Holstein did not account for one TD in the Panthers’ 17-15 win, while RB Desmond Reid continues to dazzle, totaling 139 scrimmage yards and scoring both of the team’s touchdowns.
  • After accounting for only one TD in the first two games of the year, Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard has accounted for at least 3 TDs in four consecutive games (6 pass/7 rush).
  • After missing last week’s game, Penn State RB Nicholas Singleton returned against USC and caught the game-tying TD with 3 minutes to play.  Singleton only had 10 rush attempts in the game compared to Kaytron Allen’s 16 attempts.  If Singleton is still on the mend, the bye week comes at a perfect time for him to heal up before the October 26 matchup at Wisconsin.
  • I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Jackson Arnold was not the Oklahoma offense’s problem, and Michael Hawkins certainly isn’t the answer.
  • I’ll elaborate more on this week’s show, but I think we have gotten to a place where the Texas backfield is split, at best for Blue owners, and while the hot hand may get the call more often, the fact Wisner got right back in the game following his red zone fumble and received THE NEXT touch, and took it to the house from 43 yards out, was a pivotal moment in deciphering this situation.
  • BYU RB LJ Martin, playing in his first game since September 6, scored 2 TDs in the Cougars’ 41-19 win over Arizona. There is a chance he could be in your waiver pool right now.
  • Now that Georgia is without WR Colbie Young, I feel the fantasy stock of both Dillon Bell and Arian Smith have gone up.
  • When I watch Tennessee, all I see is Dylan Sampson as a fantasy asset and QB Nico Iamaleava as someone still developing. The Vols have receivers, but more times than not Iamaleava seems uncertain of his reads and holds the ball too long. I would be surprised to see Tennessee in the CFP with Bama and Georgia still on the schedule.
  • 47 players in the FBS have at least 33 receptions, but only two of those 47 have not caught a TD pass, Appalachian State’s Kaedin Robinson (39) and Arkansas’ Andrew Armstrong (38).
  • The bye week comes at a good time for Ole Miss, as RB Henry Parrish and WR Tre Harris were unable to finish the game Saturday night at LSU.
  • Ohio State WRs Jeremiah Smith and Emeka Egbuka have combined to catch 12 of QB Will Howard’s 14 TD passes.  Smith has caught a TD pass in every game this season and Egbuka has caught a TD pass in four straight games.
  • Oregon WR Tez Johnson has caught at least 7 passes in five of six games, and he has caught 10 or more passes three times.  RB Jordan James has received at least 20 rush attempts in each of the Ducks’ last three games. He has four 100-yard rushing games this year and has scored a TD in five of six games.  QB Dillon Gabriel has scored a rushing TD in four of the last five games.
  • Syracuse WR Jackson Meeks has caught at least 8 passes in three straight games and has caught a TD pass in four straight games.  WR Trevor Pena leads the Orange with 5 TD receptions, but he has caught only one TD pass in the last four games.
  • West Virginia RB Jahiem White has scored a TD in five straight games, but he has finished with fewer than 50 rushing yards four times this season.

Group 5

  • FIU WR Eric Rivers has totaled at least 95 receiving yards in four consecutive games and has caught a TD pass in three of the last five games.
  • Liberty QB Kaidon Salter had two rushing TDs against FIU, one of which was in overtime, and at this point of the season we must concede that Salter is just an average fantasy option this year.
  • Jacksonville State RB Tre Stewart has scored at least one TD in five of six games and has totaled 9 TDs in the last three games.
  • James Madison QB Alonza Barnett has scored a rushing TD in four consecutive games and has accounted for four or more TDs in three of the last four games.
  • UTEP WR Kenny Odom has caught a TD pass in three of the last four games, while RB Ezell Jolly has taken over as the Miners’ RB1.  Jolly totaled 140 scrimmage yards against Western Kentucky Thursday night.
  • In his last four games, Western Kentucky QB Caden Veltkamp has accounted for 15 TDs (4 rushing), but has thrown 5 INTs.
  • Middle Tennessee WR Omari Kelly has posted three 100-yard receiving games in his last four games played.  MTSU’s defense is allowing an FBS-worst 320.7 passing yards per game and they have given up 19 passing TDs.
  • Louisiana Tech QB Evan Bullock threw 5 TD passes in the Bulldogs’ win over MTSU, but given how bad the Blue Raiders’ defense is statistically, I don’t think Bullock is a waiver priority.
  • Toledo WR Jerjuan Newton has caught at least one TD pass in five of six games this season.
  • UNLV QB Hajj-Malik Williams has thrown 3 TD passes in three consecutive games, and during that stretch WR Ricky White has totaled 27 receptions for 400 yards and 5 TDs.
  • Utah State WR Jalen Royals has totaled 29 receptions for 478 yards and 4 TDs in his last three games.
  • Army QB Bryson Dailey has rushed for 100 yards in five consecutive games and has scored at least two rushing TDs in five of six games.  Dailey has rushed for 14 TDs in six games.  RB Kanye Udoh has scored at least one TD in five of six games and is averaging 120.7 rushing yards per game over the last three games.
  • In two MAC games, Kent State WR Chrishon McCray has totaled 13 receptions for 401 yards and 5 TDs, while teammate Luke Floriea has caught 9 passes for 207 yards and 2 TDs.
  • Eastern Michigan RB Delbert Mimms has scored at least one rushing TD in five of six games this year.
  • Georgia State WR Ted Hurst has caught a TD pass in each of the Panthers’ last four games.
  • Given that South Florida QB Byrum Brown missed Saturday’s game due to injury, it seems possible that he may not suit up next week against UAB with the Bulls having a bye the following week.
  • San Diego State RB Marquez Cooper has scored a TD in three consecutive games, and during that stretch he has averaged 29.7 rush attempts per game.
  • Wyoming RB Sam Scott has rushed for at least 94 yards and a TD in each of the last two games.
  • The quarterback roulette at San Jose State has killed Emmett Brown shares. Brown accounted for 14 TDs in the Spartans first four games, but has accounted for only 3 TDs in the last two games, while teammate Walker Eget has not accounted for a single TD in four games played.   San Jose State WR Nick Nash kept his scoring streak alive by catching a TD pass in his sixth straight game Saturday night.  Nash leads the FBS with 10 TD receptions.
  • In Colorado State’s 31-24 win over San Jose State, RB Avery Morrow posted his third consecutive 100-yard rushing game, a stretch in which he has scored 5 TDs.
  • The weather did play a factor in the Akron-Western Michigan game, but we still have questions about the Broncos backfield with the return of Jalen Buckley. Buckley led the team with 103 yards (7 attempts), while Jaden Nixon led the team with 14 rush attempts (21 yards). I was hopeful this situation was going to be similar to that at Oregon State with Anthony Hankerson and Jam Griffin, but not if Zahir Abdul’s-Salaam is going to get 9-10 attempts per game, too.
  • Northern Illinois RB Gavin Williams has rushed for 100 yards in back-to-back games. What is even more significant is that there was some thought that RB Antario Brown might play on Saturday.  His absence in Week 7 is going to make it tough for fantasy owners to confidently roll him out in Week 8 if there is a hint that he’ll play.
  • LA Monroe RB Ahmad Hardy has scored at least one rushing TD in five of six games this year.
  • FAU RB CJ Campbell has scored at least one TD in four consecutive game during that span has averaged 83.0 rushing yards per game.
  • In the first three games of 2024, North Texas QB Chandler Morris threw 9 TD passes and 6 INTs.  In his last three games, he has thrown 11 TD passes and only one INT.
  • Both Texas State WRs, Joey Hobert and Kole Wilson, have caught a TD pass in three straight games.  Hobert has hauled in 5 TD passes over the last three games and has three multi-TD games this season.
  • 47 players in the FBS have at least 33 receptions, but only two of those 47 have not caught a TD pass, Appalachian State’s Kaedin Robinson (39) and Arkansas’ Andrew Armstrong (38).
  • Louisiana QB Ben Wooldridge has accounted for at least 3 TDs in four of six games this year.
  • Last year, Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty finished with 1,262 rushing yards in 11 games.  Currently, he has 1,248 rushing yards in 6 games.  Jeanty did have 39 receptions for 552 yards last year, and he has only 9 receptions for 39 yards this season.
