Week 10 Notes & Observations

Before I start typing this week’s edition, I feel the need to address the biggest miss of the weekend…Mississippi State QB Garrett Shrader’s no-show against Arkansas.

I know that unexpected injuries are a recurring theme in CFF, but this one really stung because I felt so strongly about Shrader’s Week 10 fantasy potential.  Given there was so many top-tier quarterbacks on a bye, I recommended Shrader over other available options to several of you via email.

Apparently, Stevens was told Thursday that he would start because Shrader was feeling ill most of the week.  Unfortunately, there wasn’t any news floating around before kickoff regarding Shrader’s playing status.  It’s a lot easier to obtain information on a player you know is battling an injury than randomly coming across injury news about a player you assumed was okay.

As a mentioned earlier, injuries are part of the CFF game, but I felt responsible for a handful of “0’s” at quarterback this weekend and I wanted to offer my apologies.

Here are my notes and observations from Week 10:

Power 5 Notes

  • Baylor WR Denzel Mims caught a TD pass for the first time in the last four games.
  • Michigan RB Zach Charbonnet has scored in five consecutive games and has scored 2 TDs in three consecutive games.
  • Wake Forest QB Jamie Newman returned from injury and accounted for 5 TDs in the Deacons’ 44-10 win over NC State.  We were able to update Newman’s status before kickoff on Saturday, so I hope many of you were able to get him in.  WR Sage Surrat caught 9 passes for 67 yards, but did not catch a TD pass for the second consecutive week. WR Kendall Hinton has caught at least 6 passes for 90 yards in three consecutive games since his return from injury.
  • Boston College RB AJ Dillon has rushed for at least 200 yards in two of the last three games and teammate David Bailey has rushed for at least 170 yards and 2 TDs in each of Dillon’s 200-yard games.
  • Syracuse WR Trishton Jackson recorded his fourth 100-yard receiving game of the year and his third multiple-TD game of 2019.
  • Nebraska QB Adrian Martinez returned and rushed for 2 TDs in the Cornhuskers’ 31-27 loss at Purdue.  Martinez has not thrown a TD pass in any of his last three games.  WR JD Spielman has at least 90 yards receiving in two consecutive games.
  • In the last two games, Purdue WR David Bell has caught 12 passes for only 41 yards.
  • Texas A&M RB Isaiah Spiller really cut into QB Kellen Mond’s fantasy production against UTSA, carrying the ball 20 times for 217 yards and 3 TDs.  TE Jalen Wydermyer has at least 50 receiving yards in each of the last 3 games and has scored in five of the last seven games.
  • Virginia Tech WR Damon Hazelton has caught a TD pass in three consecutive games.
  • Notre Dame RB Tony Jones did not play against Virginia Tech and Jafar Armstrong carried the ball 19 times for 37 yards.  TE Cole Kmet has caught a TD pass in four consecutive games.
  • Miami RB DeeJay Dallas returned from injury and carried the ball 18 times for 61 yards and a TD against Florida State.  Dallas’ return led to Cam Harris only getting two carries against the Seminoles.
  • Florida State’s lone TD was scored by RB Cam Akers, who has scored in all but one game this season.
  • Kansas State QB Skylar Thompson has rushed for 7 TDs in the last two games.  He has accounted for at least 3 TDs in three consecutive games.
  • Stephon Robinson led all Kansas receivers with 62 receiving yards against Kansas State, but he was kept out of the end zone for the first time in four games.
  • Oklahoma State WR Tylan Wallace’s fantasy owners were dealt a big blow late in the week when it was announced Wallace would miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL.  In Wallace’s absence Dillon Stoner led the Cowboys in receiving, catching three passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Remember that four-game stretch when we were worried about Clemson RB Travis Etienne?  He has ripped off four consecutive 100-yard rushing games and totaled 5 TDs in the last two games.  WRs Tee Higgins and Justyn Ross scored in the same game for the first time this season in Saturday’s win against Wofford.
  • Utah RB Zack Moss rushed for 100 yards and scored 2 TDs in the Utes’ win at Washington.  After a bye week, Moss will be set to explode in the fantasy playoffs (UCLA, Arizona, Colorado).
  • Washington QB Jacob Eason has thrown 7 TD passes in his last two games.
  • After a disappointing 3-game stretch in the middle of the season, Mississippi State RB Kylin Hill has bounced back with 384 rushing yards and 4 TDs in his last two games.
  • Indiana WR Whop Philyor’s reception totals over the last 5 games:  14-10-2-14-2.  All-or-nothing.  RB Stevie Scott had his best fantasy game of the season on Saturday against Northwestern, totaling 136 yards of offense and scoring 3 TDs.  Scott has now scored in three consecutive games.  Michael Penix and Peyton Ramsey split time at quarterback against the Wildcats.
  • Auburn RB DJ Williams has topped the 90-yard rushing mark in each of the past two games.  WR Seth Williams did not score in Saturday’s game against Ole Miss, which was the first game he has failed to catch a TD pass in since Auburn’s Week 2 matchup against Tulane (Williams did not play in Week 3).
  • Virginia QB Bryce Perkins had his best fantasy game of the 2019 season in Saturday’s win over North Carolina.  Hopefully, that performance can carryover into next week’s matchup against Georgia Tech.
  • After not catching a pass last week, North Carolina WR Dyami Brown caught 6 passes for 202 yards and 3 TDs against Virginia.  QB Sam Howell has thrown at least 4 TD passes in three of the last four games.  After a bye, UNC has Pitt, Mercer, and NC State to close out the regular season.
  • Vanderbilt HC Derek Mason said that WR Kalija Lipscomb did not play against South Carolina due to personal reasons and was not a disciplinary move.
  • South Carolina WR Bryan Edwards caught 14 passes for 139 yards and a TD in the Gamecocks’ win over Vanderbilt.
  • Oregon WR Juwan Johnson played in his third game this season and caught 7 passes for 106 yards and 3 TDs in the Ducks’ 56-24 win at USC.
  • USC WR Michael Pittman caught another TD pass on Saturday and has now scored in six of the Trojans’ last seven games.
  • Coming off his big Week 9 performance, Colorado WR Laviska Shenault only totaled 31 yards of offense on Saturday at UCLA.
  • UCLA RB Joshua Kelley has rushed for at least 120 yards in four of his last five games and has scored in six consecutive games.

Group 5 Notes

  • Georgia Southern RB Wesley Kennedy has rushed for 100 yards and scored 2 TDs in three consecutive games.  Teammate JD King has at least 19 rushing attempts in four consecutive games and QB Shai Werts finally scored his first rushing TD of the season.
  • After scoring 9 rushing TDs in the first four games of the season, Appalachian State RB Darrynton Evans has only scored 1 rushing TD in the last 4 games.
  • Navy RB Jamale Carothers has scored in four consecutive games and has scored 7 TDs the last two games.  QB Malcolm Perry has five consecutive 100-yard rushing games and has scored at least 2 rushing TDs in six of the last seven games.
  • UConn WR Cameron Ross has caught at least 6 passes in 5 of the last 6 games.
  • In Northern Illinois’ 48-10 loss at Central Michigan, RB Tre Harbison rushed for a season-low 17 yards.
  • Central Michigan RB Jonathan Ward topped the 100-yard rushing mark for the sixth time this season and scored in his fifth consecutive game.  Teammate Kobe Lewis has topped the 100-yard rushing mark in three of the last four games.  WR Kalil Pimpleton has caught a TD pass in four of the last five games.
  • Buffalo RB Jaret Patterson has rushed for at least 130 yards and a TD in four of the last six games.  Teammate Kevin Marks has scored a rushing TD in five of the last six games.
  • I had 2 emails this week questioning the ranking of Liberty QB Stephen Calvert, who had only thrown more than 2 TDs in a game twice this season.  Hats off to you guys that gave him the start against UMass.  In my opinion, the fact that RB Frankie Hickson outscored teammate Joshua Mack 3-0 was disappointing for Mack’s owners.
  • Houston RB Mulbah Car has rushed for 130 yards in back-to-back games.
  • Central Florida RB Bentavous Thompson has scored 2 TDs in back-to-back, so it will be interesting to see what impact he has once Greg McCrae returns from injury.
  • Bowling Green RB Andrew Clair returned from injury and carried the ball 29 times for 86 yards and 2 TDS against Akron.  If you need RB depth, Clair could be a decent option moving forward, especially if he is going to see a heavy workload.
  • CoastalCarolina RB CJ Marable has scored in every game this season, but his carries have gone down when comparing his numbers from the first three games of the season.  However, Coastal Carolina has played some of the better teams in the Sun Belt and Marable’s touches should go up after Thursday’s game vs. Louisiana.  The Chanticleers play Arkansas State, LA Monroe, and Texas State in the final three weeks of the season.
  • Marshall RB Brenden Knox has rushed for 100 yards and scored a TD in three of the last four games.
  • Army QB Kelvin Hopkins isn’t 100% healthy, which is why Jabari Laws started against Air Force.
  • Air Force fullback Timothy Jackson has rushed for 100 yards and a TD in four consecutive games.
  • UNLV RB Charles Williams has only topped the 100-yard mark one time in the last six games and he has only scored 1 TD during that stretch.  A must-start in the first one-third of the season, Williams isn’t look start-worthy now.  UNLV WR Randal Grimes does not have a 100-yard receiving game this season, but he has scored in four straight games and benefited from Kenyon Oblad taking over at quarterback.  QB Kenyon Oblad has thrown 2 or more TD passes in five consecutive games and eclipsed the 250-yard passing mark in four of the last five.
  • Colorado State WR Warren Jackson posted his fourth consecutive 100-yard receiving game in Saturday’s win over UNLV.
  • Arkansas State RB Marcel Murray’s stats from the last 3 weeks:

35-164-0

22-114-2

24-175-3

  • North Texas RB Tre Siggers has now played in three consecutive games without scoring.  There seems to be some motivation to let QB Mason Fine throw as many TD passes as possible. Fine has thrown 12 TD passes in the last two games after totaling 11 TD passes in the previous six games combined.  WR Jaelon Darden has scored in four consecutive games and in seven of the last eight.
  • UTEP RB Treyvon Hughes does not have a 100-yard game, but has scored a TD in four consecutive games.
  • Charlotte RB Benny LeMay was a scratch yesterday after missing the game against Middle Tennessee with soreness in his lower leg.  The move was reportedly cautionary, which means that he will likely return for the upcoming matchup against UTEP.
  • Tulane QB Justin McMillan has accounted for at least 3 TDs in three of the last four games.
  • Western Kentucky WR Lucky Jackson extended his 100-yard streak to three games.  Jackson has at least 140 receiving yards in three consecutive games.
  • Oregon State RB Jermar Jefferson looked the healthiest he has been in quite some time, carrying the ball 22 times for 105 yards and 3 TDs against Arizona.  Even though Artavis Pierce topped the 100-yard mark and scored a TD, many of his owners will be feeling quite uncomfortable moving forward.  WR Isaiah Hodgins caught 2 TDs on Saturday and he now has four multiple-TD games this season.
  • Grant Gunnell outplayed Khalil Tate in Arizona’s 56-38 loss to Oregon State and I have no idea why the Wildcats won’t make the switch permanent.  RB JJ Taylor totaled 167 yards of offense and touched the ball 28 times on Saturday (21 rush, 7 rec.).
  • Louisiana RB Trey Ragas dressed for Saturday’s game and was one of the team captains, but did not play against Texas State.
  • ECU QB Holton Ahlers had his best fantasy game of the season against Cincinnati.  I watched a lot of that game and Ahlers couldn’t miss a receiver.  I am not ready to jump on the wagon right now.  Freshman WR CJ Johnson hauled in 12 passes for 283 yards and a TD and has now gone over 100 yards receiving in three of the last four games.
  • Cincinnati RB Michael Warren made his return against ECU and carried the ball 18 times for 141 grads and 3 TDs.
  • If there is any fantasy value remaining in the Utah State offense, it will show next week at Fresno State or in Week 14 at New Mexico.  Weeks 12-13 don’t look attractive with the Aggies playing Wyoming and Boise State, although both are at home.
  • New Mexico RB Ahmari Davis has rushed for at least 80 yards in each of his last six games and has carried the ball at least 15 times in six of eight games.
  • Nevada WR Romeo Doubs topped the 100-yard receiving mark for the second time this season and has at least 80 receiving yards in each of his last four games.
  • Boise State Robert Mahone did not play in Saturday’s game at San Jose State, but freshman RB George Holani certainly had the look of the Broncos’ No. 1 back.  Holani carried the ball 28 times for 126 yards and 4 TDs.
  • San Jose State WR Bailey Gaither has caught a TD pass in five consecutive games.
  • SMU WR James Proche was obviously playing with a slight injury, but he caught 13 passes against Memphis for 149 yards and a TD.  Proche has now scored in each of the Mustangs’ last eight games.
  • Memphis RB Kenneth Gainwell went down with an injury in the fourth quarter against SMU, but after the game, HC Mike Norvell said that Gainwell was fine and his injury was not serious.  WR Damonte Coxie has gone over the 100-yard receiving mark in back-to-back games and has topped the 90-yard mark in three of the last four.  After totaling over 300 all-purpose yards against SMU, WR Antonio Gibson could get more touches moving forward.  QB Brady White has thrown at least 3 TD passes in five of Memphis’ last seven games.
  • Fresno State RB Ronnie Rivers has scored in four consecutive games and has scored 2 TDs in three consecutive games.
  • Cole McDonald’s fantasy owners who went to bed late Saturday night probably woke up disappointed that McDonald only accounted for 2 of Hawaii’s 5 offensive TDs.
