Week 2 Notes & Observations

Power 5

  • Kansas QB Jason Bean might be good for an occasional spot-start this year.
  • One week after I had UVA’s Jelani Woods as my TE1, he goes for 5-122-1 against Illinois.
  • Georgia Tech RB Jahmyr Gibbs had 100 total yards of offense against Kennesaw State, but it was incredibly disappointing he couldn’t get into the end zone.
  • It doesn’t matter who Oklahoma State plugs into the outside receiver position, the system just favors that spot, as slot receiver Brennan Presley may not last much longer on rosters if he doesn’t do much over the next week or two…if owners are even that patient. I’m not.
  • No concern here with Kenneth Walker only getting 7 carries against Youngstown State.  WR Jayden Reed has at least 4 receptions and 60 yards in each of the Spartans’ first two games.
  • How about Trey Potts getting 34 carries in his first start as the Gophers’ RB1?  Gotta love it if you scored Potts off the waiver wire.
  • Northwestern RB Evan Hull looks cemented as the Wildcats’ RB1 after his 22-126-2 game against Indiana State.
  • Not only did Anthony Brown solidly himself as QB1 at Oregon, but his win at OSU, coupled with UCLA’s win against LSU, has put the Pac12 in the CFP discussion. Hopefully, RB CJ Verdell can stay healthy.
  • It’s Hendon Hooker’s turn to take over the Volunteers’ offense.
  • Tough to get a read on the Auburn passing game after two cupcake matchups against Akron and Alabama State.
  • South Carolina RB Kevin Harris had to be on a snap count with on 7 rushing attempts in a close game against ECU.
  • Prediction on the Florida QB situation:  Emory Jones will start against Alabama, struggle, and Anthony Richardson will take over…for the rest of the year.
  • Tight End Michael Mayer has 16 catches for 201 yards and 3 TDs in the first two games.
  • Purdue RB Zander Horvath is expected to be out for a while with a lower-leg injury.
  • No specifics released yet, but I expect Texas A&M QB Haynes King to miss some time, possibly several weeks, after suffering a lower-leg injury at Colorado.
  • Nebraska WR Samori Toure with back-to-back 130-yard receiving games.
  • I thought with QB JT Daniels not playing against UAB that Georgia would pound their way to a win, but instead Stetson Bennett and Carson Beck combined for 6 passing TDs and Bulldogs only scored one rushing TD.
  • Put some eyes on Cal RB Damien Moore, at least 70 yards and a TD in two straight games.
  • Will TCU continue to ride RB Zach Evans as they did against Cal?  I would like to think so, but I’m not overly confident about it.  Still, how can you not start Evans next week after his 22-190-1 performance?
  • Tough break for Phil Jurkovec’s fantasy owners as he left the game against UMass with a right wrist injury.  Details on the severity of the injury were not reported immediately after the game.
  • Looking at Iowa’s schedule, Penn State at home and Wisconsin on the road seem to be their two toughest games, so I think you roll with their DST every week.
  • I still do not think the Clemson backfield is settled unless they have settled for a committee approach, and if so, it seems to be Pace and Shipley.
  • West Virginia RB Leddie Brown’s 2 rushing TDs against CW Post was expected.  His 31 rushing yards on 15 carries was very disappointing.
  • Wisconsin RB Chez Mellusi with 20 carries for 144 yards and a TD against EMU, but now we on the Jalen Berger watch after he rushed for 62 yards and a TD on 15 carries.
  • Baylor RB Abram Smith has topped the 100-yard rushing mark and scored two TDs in back-to-back games.
  • Texas Tech WR Erik Ezukanma has caught at least 6 passes for 140 yards in each of the Red Raiders’ first two games.
  • Is Ahmari Huggins-Bruce developing into the playmaker Louisville needs at receiver?  4 catches for 150 yards against Eastern Kentucky.
  • Maryland WRs Dontay Demus and Rakim Jarrett have caught a TD pass in each of the Terrapins’ first two games.  Demus has topped the 125-yard mark in back-to-back weeks.
  • Some of you might have been a little premature in your thinking about moving on from UNC RB Ty Chandler.  15 carries for 58 yards and a TD against Georgia State.  Chandler had 11 more carries than any other Tar Heels RB.
  • Indiana RB Stephen Carr has carried the ball at least 19 times in each of the Hoosiers’ first two games.
  • Kentucky RB Chris Rodriguez after two games: 46 carries, 331 yards, 4 TDs.  WR Wan’Dale Robinson has started the year with back-to-back 100-yard receiving games.
  • Missouri RB Tyler Badie after two games: 264 rush yards, 128 receiving yards, 3 TDs.
  • Ole Miss WR Dontario Drummond definitely Rebels’ WR1.  I can see some fantasy owners wanting to move on from Braylon Sanders.  Would I move on from him?  Depends on the depth of my league and who I want to pick up.
  • Florida State RB Jashaun Corbin has started the year with back-to-back 100-yard rushing games and has scored a TD in each game.
  • I would be shocked if Washington doesn’t make a change in offensive coordinator soon.  Their scheme and play calling look like a Pop Warner offense.
  • LSU freshman RB Corey Kiner led the Tigers in rushing with 56 yards and a TD on 11 carries.  The offense mighty be ready to move away from Tyrion Davis-Price and John Emery.
  • Utah RB Micah Bernard exploded for 146 yards and a TD on 12 carries in the Utes 26-17 loss at BYU.  An early fumble didn’t help Tavion Thomas’ fantasy owners.
  • Stanford looked like a much different team than the one that lost at Kansas state last week, but Austin Jones’ fantasy owners should be concerned after only rushing for 13 yards on 10 carries.  It did help that Jones finished with 54 receiving yards.  Expect Nathaniel Peat to get more carries after his 87-yard TD run.
  • BJ Baylor looked the part as Oregon State’s lead back, but it also helped they played Hawaii.  Just to make you aware, LB Jake Colletto does get used in the wildcat formation and he scored the Beavers’ first TD of the game with a 2-yard run.

Group 5

  • Reese White confirmed as CCU RB1.
  • While Deven Thompkins seems solidified as Utah State’s WR1, Derek Wright looks like the next-best option in the passing game.
  • UTEP WR Jacob Cowing has caught a TD pass in all three of the Miners’ games this year.
  • Five carries for 22 yards and a TD is not promising for owners of George Holani.  However, I think he’s a hold right now because he’s their best back and there is a good chance coaches are easing him back from injury.
  • Kent State only attempted 19 passes against VMI and RBs Marquez Cooper (12-119-1) and Xavier Williams (13-65) once again split carries.  They each had 8 rushing attempts at Texas A&M.
  • WKU WR Jarreth Sterns has caught at least 7 passes for 100 yards and 2 TDs in the Hilltoppers’ first two games of 2021.
  • Army FB Jakobi Buchanan has scored a rushing TD in back-to-back games.
  • After a slow start, NIU Harrison Waylee balled out for 179 yards and 2 TDs against Wyoming. Didn’t see that one coming. He should roll in MAC play.
  • I think Tulsa RB Deneric Prince will be a solid fantasy option moving forward.
  • I think there should be a slight concern about O’Shaan Allison’s presence if you are an owner of De’Montre Tuggle.
  • Toledo WR Devin Maddox has gone over the 90-yard mark in each of the Rockets’ first two games.
  • I would not be surprised in UConn doesn’t score more than 5 offensive touchdowns in their remaining 8 games against FBS opponents.
  • Buffalo WR Quain Williams has topped the 90-yard mark in each of the Bulls’ first two games.
  • Akron WR Michael Mathison has caught at least 7 passes in each of the Zips’ first two games.
  • If there was a positive for UAB against Georgia, it was that RB DeWayne McBride bounced back with a decent performance, rushing for 61 yards on 13 carries.
  • It seems Navy has a ways to go before they are competitive with Air Force and Army.
  • Air Force FB Brad Roberts has 54 rushing attempts after two games (208 yards and 2 TD).
  • SMU WR Reggie Roberson has 8 catches for 101 yards in two games, while teammates Danny Gray, Rashee Rice, and Grant Calcaterra have each scored a TD in both games this year.  I can feel the questions coming this week about fantasy owners wanting to jump ship.  He’s still a hold for me.
  • Bowling Green WR Austin Osborne has caught at least 7 passes in each of the Falcons’ first two games, but he is only averaging 5.8 yards per reception.
  • Western Michigan QB Kaleb Eleby has only accounted for 2 TDs in two games, and I would not be surprised to see him post average numbers over the next 2-3 games (@Pitt, San Jose St., @ Buffalo), but the backend of the schedule looks good.
  • A light day for UTSA RB Sincere McCormick, who only carried the ball 7 times against Lamar, but he scored 2 TDs and had 46 yards rushing.  I thought Lamar would keep it close for a half but the Roadrunners led 34-0 at the half.
  • Houston WR Nathaniel Dell has caught at least 7 passes for 80 yards in each of the Cougars’ first two games.
  • Marshall WRs Talik Keaton and Corey Gammage deserve some attention.  QB Grant Wells has passed for 333 yards in each of the Thundering Herd’s first two games.
  • Those who plucked UCF RB Isaiah Bowser off the waiver wire were rewarded this week with his 4-TD game against Bethune-Cookman.
  • Memphis WR Calvin Austin averaged 39.8 yards per catch against Arkansas State, totaling 239 yards and 3 TDs on 6 catches.  RB Brandon Thomas is off to a hot start, rushing for 338 yards and 3 TDs in the first two games.
  • This week, James Blackman relieved starter Layne Hatcher and threw 4 TD passes.  Last week, it was Hatcher who threw 4 TD passes in relief.  I’m not sure where things stand now.  WR Te’Vailance Hunt has at least 96 receiving yards and a TD in each of ASU’s first two games.
  • Roderic Burns North Texas WR1 (2gms: 17 rec., 250 yds., TD).
  • New Mexico QB Terry Wilson has thrown 3 TD passes in back-to-back games.
  • USM WR Jason Brownlee returned to action and caught five passes, one of which went for a TD, but he only had 19 yards receiving.
  • Liberty WR Demario Douglas has caught a TD pass in each of the Flames’ first two games.
  • FIU WR Tyrese Chambers has caught a TD pass in back-to-back games.
  • Colorado State TE Trey McBride has caught 21 passes for 230 yards and a TD in the first two games.
  • Fresno State WR Jalen Cropper has caught a TD pass in all three games this season.
