Week 5 Notes & Observations

POWER 5

  • South Carolina running back Marshawn Lynch has scored a touchdown in four of five games this year, and has three multiple-TD games.
  • Pause the thought about Miles Davis taking over the RB1 spot at BYU. After Davis left with an injury against Utah State, Christopher Brooks ran for 90 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.
  • I mentioned on this week’s podcast that Week 5 was a pivotal game for UCLA running back Zach Charbonnet’s fantasy owners. His utilization against Washington showed that he’s worth the long-term investment. Charbonnet had 22 carries compared to Keegan Jones’ five.
  • We will have to be on the lookout for Malik Cunningham updates during the week, as the Louisville quarterback left Saturday’s game against Boston College with an undisclosed injury. Cunningham ran for three touchdowns, giving him nine rushing touchdowns in five games, and eight in the last three games.
  • Kansas State quarterback Adrian Martinez is vulturing all of the rushing touchdowns in the Kansas State offense. He has scored seven rushing touchdowns in the past two games, while running back Deuce Vaughn hasn’t scored a rushing touchdown since the Wildcats’ Week 2 win over Missouri.
  • Looking at Texas Tech’s schedule in the preseason, I didn’t think they would get consistent fantasy production until they got into November, but the games against TCU and Kansas certainly look much different now and the Red Raiders might struggle to win two games the rest of the year.
  • Minnesota running back Mohamed Ibrahim was an unexpected and unannounced scratch from Saturday’s game against Purdue, reportedly due to an undisclosed injury.
  • Illinois running back Chase Brown has topped the 100 yard rushing Mark in all five games this year and leads the nation in rushing.
  • Wisconsin finished with the team total of two rushing yards in Saturday’s loss to Illinois. The most disappointing was Braelon Allen, who finished with 2 yards on eight rushing attempts.
  • Kentucky running back Chris Rodriguez made his first appearance of the 2022 season and finished with 72 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries in the Wildcats’ 22-19 loss at Ole Miss.
  • Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel left Saturday’s game against TCU with a concussion.
  • TCU quarterback Max Duggan has thrown at least three touchdown passes in three consecutive games, while running back Kendre Miller has scored a rushing touchdown in all four games.
  • After scoring a rushing touchdown in each of Utah’s first three games of the year, running back Tavion Thomas has only totaled 73 rushing yards in the last two games. There are some off-field issues going on with Thomas, so I think he’s a hold right now, but don’t expect to see him highly ranked next week.
  • Maryland running back Antwain Littleton II has scored a rushing touchdown in all five games this year. Saturday’s game against Michigan State was the first time he had received more than eight carries, and he finished with 120 yards on 19 attempts.
  • North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye has accounted for five touchdowns in four of five games this year.
  • Iowa State running back Jirehl Brock will be week-to-week after suffering an ankle injury in Saturday’s loss to Kansas. Receiver Xavier Hutchinson has caught at least eight passes in all five games this year.
  • Initial reports indicate Alabama quarterback Bryce Young has a sprained shoulder, so he shouldn’t be out long, but his fantasy owners must be plugged in this week to see if he will play against Texas A&M.
  • Patience has paid off for the fantasy owners of Oklahoma State running back Dominic Richardson, who certainly seems to be cemented in that RB1 spot in the Cowboys’ backfield.
  • Baylor running back Richard Reese has scored a touchdown in three consecutive games, and in four of five games this year.
  • With Armoni Goodwin out against Auburn, Josh Williams received the lion’s share of carries in LSU’s 21-17 win at Auburn. He finished the game with 17 rush attempts while John Emery and Noah Cain combined for 13.
  • Auburn running back Tank Bigsby has not rushed for more than 51 yards against an FBS opponent this year (4 games).
  • Clemson tight end Jake Briningstool has caught a touchdown pass in three of the last four games.
  • West Virginia running back CJ Donaldson was carted off with a head/neck injury against Texas, so be on the lookout for updates in the coming days, but after something like that you assume a player will not be immediately available the next week. Fortunately, the Mountaineers have a bye before an upcoming Thursday matchup against Baylor on October 13th.
  • Texas running back Bijan Robinson has scored a touchdown in every game this year, has three multiple-TD games, and has ripped off three consecutive 100 yard rushing games.
  • Pitt running back Israel Abanikanda left in the second quarter of Saturday’s game against Georgia Tech with what seemed to be a shoulder injury. He was seen in the second half on the sidelines with his arm in a sling.
  • Arizona receiver Jacob Cowing has caught a touchdown pass in all five games this season, and he has topped the 130-yard receiving mark three times.
  • Since the season opener against Georgia, Oregon quarterback Bo Nix has accounted for three or more touchdowns in four consecutive games, and he is accounted for at least four scores in three of those four games.

FULL FBS

  • With Utah State quarterback Logan Bonner gone for the season, Cooper Legas takes over as the starter. Legas has some dual threat ability, as he showed against BYU with 52 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
  • Tulane running back Tyjae Spears has scored a touchdown in four of five games this year, and the only game in which he did not score was against Alcorn State, when he only got five touches.
  • Houston running back Brandon Campbell returned to the lineup and led the Cougars in rushing against Tulane with 66 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. He has now scored a touchdown in three of four games this year.
  • In the three games leading up to Saturday’s game against UTSA, Middle Tennessee running back Frank Peasant was averaging 18 rush attempts per game. On Saturday against the Road Runners, he only had three rushing attempts.
  • Jordan Byrd looks to have separated himself from the other running backs on the San Diego State roster. The schedule loosens up in the next next few weeks, so if you play in a deep league and need another option he should get some consideration.
  • UNLV running back Aidan Robbins has scored a touchdown in all five games this year, and he has carried the ball at least 23 times in each of the last three games.
  • Air Force fullback Brad Roberts has rushed for 100 yards or more in four of five games this year.
  • Memphis running back Brandon Thomas and tight end Caden Prieskorn have scored a touchdown in four consecutive games.
  • I am not sure if anything is wrong with Northern Illinois running back and Antario Brown, but he only has 16 rushing attempts in the last three games, and unless I am playing in a keeper league, I would be moving on from him right now.
  • Even with three starters returning along the offensive line, the Central Michigan running game is struggling this year, and all you have to do is reference Lou Nichols’ 3.5 yards per carry average.  Last year, Nichols averaged 5.5 yards per carry. Tight end Joel Wilson has caught a touchdown pass in four consecutive games.
  • Marshall running back Khalan Laborn has scored at least one touchdown in every game this year, has three multiple-TD games, and is averaging 146.2 rushing yards per game.
  • Florida Atlantic receiver Lajohntay Wester has caught at least one touchdown pass in five consecutive games.
  • Liberty quarterback Kaidon Salter was replaced in the second half by Johnathan Bennett. After the game head coach Hugh Freeze said that Salter wasn’t right and they needed to get him better for the second half of the season. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Bennett get the start at UMass next week.
  • Cincinnati receiver Tyler Scott has now caught a touchdown pass in four consecutive games. Running back Corey Kiner has scored a rushing touchdown in each of the Bearcats’ first five games this year.
  • Tulsa running back then Deneric Prince made his first appearance of the year and led the team in rushing with 71 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries.
  • Coastal Carolina receiver Jared Brown has now posted back to back 100-yard receiving games and has scored three touchdowns in the past two weeks. Quarterback Grayson McCall has accounted for three touchdowns in every game this season.
  • UAB running back DeWayne McBride is averaging 173.7 yards per game through three games and has scored six touchdowns.
  • San Jose State running back Kairee Robinson has scored a rushing touchdown in three consecutive games.
