Week 7 Notes & Observations

G5 Notes

  • Tulane:  Stephon Huderson led the Green Wave in rushing against SMU, and so it seems I misjudged the RB situation.  Unless it was a case of riding the hot hand, Huderson seems to be the new RB1, not Cameron Carroll.
  • SMU:  Tyler Page caught 4 passes for 101 yards at Tulane Friday night.  Page should continue to see more playing time with the loss to Reggie Roberson to injury.  Tyler Lavine is handling RB2 duties, but Ulysses Bentley should get a majority of the carries with the loss of TJ McDaniel.
  • Houston:  WR Marquez Stevenson only caught one pass against BYU.  The Cougars spread it around so much in the passing game, I’m not sure Stevenson will put up big numbers consistently.
  • Coastal Carolina: RB CJ Marable has scored at least 2 TDs in three straight games, WR Jaivon Heiligh has caught a TD pass in each of the Chanticleers’ first four games, and QB Grayson McCall has accounted for at least 3 TDs in three of four games this year.  Coastal Carolina might just be the most improved team in the country.
  • Liberty:  RB Joshua Mack did not record a carry in the Flames’ 38-21 win at Syracuse.  Supposedly, Mack is battling an illness, but whatever the reason, he hasn’t done much in the past two weeks, and with the recent emergence on Shedro Louis, I am concerned about him being a consistent fantasy factor moving forward.
  • Temple:  I had high hopes for RB Re’Mahn Davis and the Temple offense this year, but after seeing them struggle against Navy and South Florida, I am cooling on them.  I know they have only played two games, but it’s not like the matchups are going to get any easier.
  • Navy:  FB Nelson Smith has rushed for at least 120 yards in back-to-back games and has scored 2 rushing TDs in three of Navy’s last four games.
  • East Carolina:  Freshman QB Mason Garcia was given the starting nod with Holton Ahlers out, and the true freshman did not do anything to suggest a change is coming.  However, freshman RB Rahjai Harris has been impressive in the last two games, totaling 287 rushing yards and scoring 3 TDs.  WR CJ Johnson only caught one pass for 15 yards, his second 1-catch game in the last three weeks.
  • South Alabama:  WR Jalen Tolbert has at least 90 yards receiving in three of four games this year and has caught at least one TD in three of four games.  RB Carlos Davis has rushed for at least 80 yards in each of the Jaguars’ first four games and has topped the 100-yard mark in each of the last two games.
  • Central Florida: WR Marlon Williams has caught at least 9 passes in all four games this season and has topped the 130-yard mark three times, while WR Jaylon Robinson has topped the 100-yard mark in all four games.  QB Dillon Gabriel passed for 601 yards in Saturday’s 50-49 loss at Memphis, and he has topped the 400-yard mark three times this season.
  • Memphis:  The biggest news coming out of the post-game press conference after the Tigers’ 50-49 win over UCF was the announcement that WR Damonte Coxie was not currently part of the program.  No specifics were given.  Junior Calvin Austin (9-151-2) and freshman Tahj Washington (7-131-0) both topped the 100-yard receiving mark Saturday afternoon.
  • UTSA: QB Lowell Narcisse was carted off the field in Saturday’s loss to Army, so expect to see Frank Harris starting next week’s game against Louisiana Tech.  RB Sincere McCormick posted his third 100-yard rushing game of the year against Army, and he has now carried the ball at least 18 times in five of six games.  WR Zakhari Franklin has caught a TD pass in three of the four games in which he has played this season.
  • Army: FB Sandon McCoy has scored in three of five games this year, but he has not topped the 50-yard mark one time.  Anthony Adkins has rushed for at least 70 yards and a TD in two of the last three games.
  • Western Kentucky: The Hilltoppers did hand the keys to the offense over to Kevaris Thomas, who started and finished the 37-14 loss at UAB.  Thomas completed 16-of-35 passes for 162 yards and 2 TDs, but also threw 2 INTs.
  • UMass:  The Minutemen do not have any other games scheduled right now, but keep a watch for announcements, because as soon as they schedule another FBS game, you might want to pick up that team’s DST.
  • Georgia State:  RB Destin Coates did not play in Thursday’s game at Arkansas State.  I missed the pregame announcement on that one, and as of Saturday night, still haven’t seen a reason for his absence.  Tucker Gregg carried the ball 14 times for 142 yards and a TD, so I can only imagine what Coates’ numbers would have been.
  • Troy:  WR Kaylon Geiger has caught at least 6 passes in three consecutive games and has posted back-to-back 100-yard receiving games.  RB BJ Smith has not rushed for 50 yards in any of the Trojans’ last three games, while freshman RB Kimani Vidal has gone over the 100-yard mark in each of the last two games.
  • North Texas:  After his 5-TD game at Middle Tennessee, QB Jason Bean seems destined to re-assume the starting role for the Mean Green.  Bean completed 12-of-17 passes for 181 yards and 2 TDs, while rushing for a team-high 169 yards and 3 TDs in Saturday’s 52-35 win.  RB DeAndre Torrey has rushed for at least 80 yards in four of five games this season.  WR Jaelon Darden has caught at least 10 passes in three straight games and has posted back-to-back 200-yard receiving games.
  • Louisiana Tech:  I believe next week will determine RB Justin Henderson’s fate on fantasy rosters in 2020.  Tech’s schedule is very favorable in November, so this week’s game at UTSA should give us a much better idea of what to expect during that stretch.  I do not want any part of the Bulldogs’ offense right now, especially in two weeks when they play UAB.

P5 Notes

  • BYU: WR Dax Milne has caught at least 7 passes in four consecutive games and has topped the 100-yard mark in three of those four.  He has become one of the more consistent fantasy receivers this year.
  • Clemson: The pain of having RB Travis Etienne is knowing that they are not going to use him if they don’t need to.  Ten different players had a rushing attempt in the Tigers’ 73-7 win at Georgia Tech.  QB Trevor Lawrence has thrown at least 3 TD passes in four straight games and has accounted for at least 3 TDs in all five games this year.
  • Pitt:  Joey Yellen, the Arizona State transfer, filled in for injured starter Kenny Pickett, and completed 22-of-46 passes for 277 yards and a TD in the Panthers’ 31-19 loss at Miami.  Yellen will likely take over as the starter next year.
  • Syracuse: RB Sean Tucker returned from injury and posted another 100-yard rushing game.  Tucker has carried the ball at least 20 times in each of his last two games.  The freshman back is definitely an important piece to the Syracuse offense, but I would only consider starting him when the matchups are somewhat favorable.
  • West Virginia:  WR Bryce Ford-Wheaton has caught a TD pass in three of the Mountaineers’ four games this year.  RB Leddie Brown has rushed for 100-plus yards in three of four games and has scored at least 2 TDs in three of four games.
  • Auburn:  I thought we would see improvement from QB Bo Nix in his second season, but he hasn’t looked comfortable at all this year.  At South Carolina, he barely completed 50% of his passes (24-of-47) and threw 3 interceptions.  RB Tank Bigsby has rushed for 100 yards in back-to-back games and seems locked into that RB1 spot.  WR Seth Williams has not caught TD pass since the season opener against Kentucky.  WR Anthony Schwartz has caught at least six passes in three consecutive games.
  • South Carolina:  RB Kevin Harris has scored a rushing TD in all four games this season, has scored 2 TDs in three straight games, and has carried the ball at least 21 times in three straight games.
  • Kentucky:  RB Christopher Rodriguez has scored a rushing TD in three consecutive games.  The Wildcats’ offense hasn’t done much in the last two weeks, but the defense has made things easy for them.
  • Notre Dame:  QB Ian Book has only thrown 3 TD passes in four games.  Saturday’s 12-7 win over Louisville was played with winds consistently blowing 20mph, which certainly affected the passing game of both teams.
  • Duke:  QB Chase Brice has now thrown 6 TD passes and 11 INTs in five games this year.
  • NC State:  QB Devin Leary suffered a broken fibula and could miss up to eight weeks.  I would expect Bailey Hockman to get the start against UNC next Saturday.
  • Mississippi:  The Arkansas defense completely took away TE Kenny Yeboah, who did not catch a pass on Saturday, and was only targeted one time.
  • Arkansas:  The return of Treylon Burks seems to have squeezed De’Vion Warren’s involvement in the passing game.  Warren only caught one pass for 8 yards, while Burks caught 11 passes for 137 yards and a TD in the Razorbacks’ 33-21 win over Mississippi.  However, Rakeem Boyd’s return did not squeeze Trelon Smith out of the offense, as both backs split 29 rushing attempts (Smith-15, Boyd-14).
  • Wake Forest:  Since Walker’s 19-yard rushing game against Clemson on September 12, he has topped the 100-yard mark in each of the Demon Deacons’ last three games and has scored 7 TDs.  QB Sam Hartman has only thrown 4 TD passes in four games this season.  WR Jaquarii Roberson has caught at least 7 passes in two of the last three games.
  • Texas A&M:  WR Caleb Chapman seems to have been lost for the season with a knee injury.  The Aggies used their running game and defense to get past Mississippi State.  WR Chase Lane, TE Jalen Wydermyer, and RBs Isaiah Spiller and Ainias Smith were the only players to catch a pass in Saturday’s 28-14 win.
  • Mississippi State:  The Bulldogs are headed into an idle week and HC Mike Leach said the QB position needs to be re-evaluated.  It’s anyone’s guess as who will start at Alabama in two weeks, but I do not think either Costello or Rogers should be in a starting lineup for that game.
  • Florida State:  The Seminoles look like a completely different team since losing their first two games against Georgia Tech and Miami.  QB Jordan Travis is only completing 54.0% of his passes, but his running ability is making the offense tick right now.  Travis has scored a rushing TD in three consecutive games and has topped the 90-yard rushing mark in each of the last two games.  In traditional scoring formats, RB La’Damian Webb has cored at least 10 fantasy points in three consecutive games.  RB Jashaun Corbin should not be on a roster in non-keeper leagues.
  • North Carolina:  WR Dazz Newsome hasn’t topped the 40-yard mark in three of the Tar Heels’ four games this season, while teammate Dyami Brown has 60 yards or more in three of four games and has caught a TD pass in each of the last two games.  RB Javonte Williams has become a fantasy stud, totaling over 600 yards of offense and scoring nine touchdowns in UNC’s first four games of 2020.
  • Boston College:  QB Phil Jurkovec has passed for 300 yards and 2 TDs in four of five games this year.  I do not expect to open any David Bailey discussions until he shows signs of fantasy relevancy.
  • Virginia Tech:  QB Hendon Hooker totaled 4 TDs (1 pass, 3 rush) and 275 yards of offense (111 passing, 164 rushing) in the Hokies’ 40-14 win over Boston College.  I do not think his fantasy owners have to worry about Braxton Burmeister right now.
  • Georgia:  I am not sure why we haven’t seen JT Daniels play a snap in a Georgia uniform, but I would not be surprised to see them hit the reset button and give him a start next week at Kentucky, or at least get him in the game and use the bye week to get him ready for their matchup against Florida on November 7.
