Week 8 Notes & Observations

POWER 5

  • It remains to be seen what Clemson will do at quarterback next week after Cade Klubnik led the Tigers to a comeback win over Syracuse. Klubnik really didn’t do much, but the team did rally with him taking snaps. My guess is that DJ Uiagalelei will retain the starting job. Stay tuned.
  • Two thoughts on Ohio State:

1-Having both Miyan Williams and TreVeyon Henderson healthy makes it difficult to lock either into a starting lineup in Full FBS formats. They certainly have more fantasy appeal in P5-only and conference-specific formats. Not that they do not have fantasy worth splitting carries, but their ceiling is significantly lower compared to one guy getting 75% of the rush attempts per game.

2-I like the OSU passing game with Egbuka, Harrison, and Fleming, and it now feels like Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s fantasy owners are wondering whether or not he will have an impactful fantasy presence in the immediate future, which will lend itself to ‘start/bench’ issues for the preseason WR1.

  • Tennessee receiver Jaylin Hyatt has caught at least two touchdown passes in three consecutive games and in four of the last five games.  My guess is that Cedric Tillman will return for next week’s matchup against Kentucky.
  • Baylor running back Richard Reese has scored at least one touchdown in four of the last five games and in five of seven games this year, and he has three multiple-TD games.
  • Miami quarterback Colbie Young has caught a touchdown pass in three straight games and has posted back-to-back 100-yard receiving games.
  • It seems that Notre Dame running back Audric Estime fumbled after his third rushing attempt of the game against UNLV and never got another carry the rest of the way. Logan Diggs time?
  • Texas Tech receiver Xavier White has caught at least eight passes and a touchdown in three consecutive games. It will be interesting to see if/how White’s production will be affected after Myles Price returns.
  • Boston College receiver Zay Flowers has caught at least seven passes in five of seven games this year.
  • Wisconsin receiver Chimere Dike has caught a touchdown pass in three consecutive games.
  • UCLA receiver Jake Bobo has caught a touchdown pass in three consecutive games, with two of them being multiple-touchdown games. Running back Zach Charbonnet has topped the 120-yard rushing mark in each of the last three games. He has also received at least 20 rushing attempts in each of those games.
  • Oregon receiver Troy Franklin has caught a touchdown pass in three of the last four games and in four of the last six.
  • Ole Miss running back Quinshon Judkins has scored at least two touchdowns in five of the last six games.
  • Interesting Week 8 statistic:

Score—Alabama 30  Mississippi State 6

Total Yards—Alabama 290  Mississippi State 293

  • After back-to-back 100-yard rushing games, it seems as if Damien Martinez has assumed the RB1 spot in the Oregon State backfield.
  • Kansas State quarterbacks Adrian Martinez and Will Howard, as well as running back Deuce Vaughn, were all injured or got banged up in Saturday’s game at TCU, a situation worth monitoring going into next week’s game against Oklahoma State.
  • TCU running back Kendre Miller has scored a rushing touchdown in all seven games this year, while scoring two or more touchdowns in three of the las four games.  He has also gone north of 100 yards rushing in four of the last five games.
  • Pitt running back Israel Abanikanda has rushed for 129 yards or more in five of his last six games.

FULL FBS

  • Georgia State running back Tucker Gregg has scored at least one rushing touchdown in five consecutive games.
  • Troy running back DK Billingsley has scored a rushing touchdown in four of the last five games, and in four of the last six games.
  • Tulsa receiver Keylon Stokes had his worst fantasy performance of the season Friday night at Temple.
  • UAB running back DeWayne McBride has rushed for at least 120 yards in all six games in which he has played this year, but he was kept out of the end zone for the first time this year Friday night at Western Kentucky.
  • Western Kentucky quarterback Austin Reed accounted for only two touchdowns in Friday’s win over UAB, the first time this season he did not account for at least three touchdowns in a game.
  • Recent numbers would suggest that SMU receiver Rashee Rice is hampered by an injury, as he has only totaled seven receptions in the Mustangs’ last two games. Before that, he had caught at least eight passes in four of the team’s first five games. Teammate Jordan Kerley has caught a touchdown pass in back-to-back games.
  • Surprisingly, Kent State quarterback Collin Schlee was announced out just minutes before kickoff for Saturday’s matchup against Akron.
  • Houston receiver Nathaniel Dell has caught at least seven passes in five of the Cougars’ last six games.
  • The Marion Lukes for Lew Nichols plan didn’t work.  I’ll take the hit for that one. That was one of those situations where I feel the risk was worth taking.  Unfortunately, I was way off. Lukes left with an injury in the first half and was seen in a walking boot during the second half. Freshman quarterback Jase Bauer relieved starter Daniel Richardson and led the team in rushing with 109 yards on 16 carries.
  • Toledo tight end Jamal Turner has now caught a touchdown pass in six of eight games this year.
  • Ohio receiver Sam Wiglusz has now caught a touchdown pass in three of the last four games and has caught at least six passes in five consecutive games.
  • After referencing the fact that Rice running back Ari Broussard had scored in all six games this year, on the Week 8 Podcast, he failed to score in the Owls’ 42-41 win at Louisiana Tech.
  • Liberty quarterback Charlie Brewer made his return from injury against BYU, but don’t expect him to start next game after Johnathan Bennett’s performance against the Cougars (24/29 for 247 yards, 2 TD; 46 rush yds.).  Running back Dae Dae Hunter has now scored at least one rushing touchdown in seven consecutive games. Running back Shedro Louis has scored a rushing touchdown in three consecutive games, and he has totaled six rushing scores during that stretch.
  • Over the last three games, Colorado State running back Avery Morrow is averaging 25 rush attempts and 143.7 rushing yards per game.
  • Louisiana receiver Michael Jefferson has caught a touchdown pass in three of the last four games, and in five of the last seven.
  • Texas State receiver Ashtyn Hawkins has caught a touchdown pass in six of eight games this year and has posted four 100-yard receiving games.
  • Obviously, it was a disappointing Week 8 for John Rhys Plumlee’s fantasy owners (25/37 for 296 yards; 0 TD, 3 INT; 38 rush yds.).  Running back Isaiah Bowser has now scored at least one rushing touchdown in six of seven games this year.
