★ Top Play(s) – QB Conner Weigman ($8,800)
There aren’t many quarterbacks providing the upside and consistency that Weigman brings to the table each week, scoring 27 or more fantasy points in five of six games, with the lone occurrence being a splattering of Southern Utah. The Cowboys have been strong against the pass, allowing just 179.8 YPG, but Weigman’s involvement near the goal line gives him multiple paths to a ceiling performance. Oklahoma State is allowing just over 21 FPPG to quarterbacks this season, and we have Weigman with the 10th highest projection of the entire weekend across the country.
↓ Fade – RB Re’Shaun Sanford ($6,400) and RB Makhi Hughes ($6,600)
Where’s the upside? 50-50 split between Sanford and Hughes, separated this season by just five rushing attempts, with Weigman’s six rushing touchdowns complicating matters. Oklahoma State is adequate against the run, ranked 49th in EPA per run play defensively and allowing a combined 20 FPPG to opposing backfields. We’d be interested if there was one backfield option. Unfortunately, it’s a three-way split essentially.
↔ Pivot Play – WR Amare Thomas ($7,000)
Those that spend a first-round draft selection on Amare Thomas in CFF are not getting their monies worth this year, tied for the team lead with Patrick Overmyer in targets (46) and second in touchdowns (4). Unfortunately, Houston has far more depth at the WR position this season, so Thomas is not seeing the week-to-week consistency for fantasy production. In Houston’s most competitive matchups this season, Thomas has been featured, though, with 22 combined targets and two scores against both Oregon State and Texas Tech. We know Thomas has 30-point fantasy upside in his bag.
$ Bargain Bin – WR Trent Walker ($4,300) or WR Koby Young ($4,700)
The appeal to Walker or Koby Young as a spend-down option to Amare Thomas is that they rarely leave the field. Houston does not rotate at wide receiver, with both Young and Walker playing over 78% of snaps last week vs. Kansas State. Oklahoma State ranks 108th in explosive pass plays allowed, so Young would be the preferred choice here, averaging close to 22 YPC with four touchdowns.
+ Best of the Rest – TE Patrick Overmyer ($5,600)
No Overmyer, no cash last week as the former UTSA transfer caught not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 touchdowns in the win over Kansas State and is now the No. 1 fantasy tight end in the country in points scored. Overmyer was far more enticing in the $4k range then where he’s at now, but even a tight end is in play at this salary when he leads his team in targets and receiving touchdowns.
